Thanks for the welcome. Is this your home away from PP? Rich finally talked me into joining 3geez, I like it so far.

ya the flywheel will make it spool up faster, but it will also make it spool down faster...too fast more than likely for a turbo application.

OK. I'll put off the flywheel, it'll save me $275 by not buying it.

On a different note, kinda off subject, does anyone know where I can get a fifth gear for a 3g Accord? I hear that the gears from a 3g Accord are interchangeable with those in a 2g Prelude. I'd like the Accord 5th because it would be better for highway use. When I shift from 4th to 5th with my current gears the engine RPM only drops about 500. It sucks doing 80 mph and the engine screaming at about 4100 RPM.

Thanks for the link (added it to my favorites list) $67 isn't bad, even after shipping shouldn't be more than about $80.

for a transmission, you can swap integra gears into our gearboxes. If you use integra gears 1-4 (their really close together) or 1-3 (some people like accord gear #4, just because its further apart, higher top speed) you can use that for a good hybrid tranny. Integra setup is definately better for acceleration.

For a turbo he'd probably want to keep the stock gears.

I like the stock gears, except for fifth, they are close enough in ratio for me. Anything closer and I'd be doing 20 Mph shifting out of 3rd. (joke) Fifth I want to be more of an overdrive than it currently is. When you shift to 5th it seems as though there should be 1 more gear.

Wish it was possable, I start to drool everytime I think about it.

    Sorry.
Anyway. yeah. Better fith gear ratio, gotta have it.

lude gears are a bit shorter. if you want to spool up that turbo you might have to get a accord tranny.

yeah i wouldnt go any shorter than a lude tranny. That has shorter 3rd 4th and 5th. I personally have a carbed tranny (longest gears of all). Thumbs up to this thread!! finally a noob that knows somthing

Thanks for the props, and the advice. Would an '87 carberated Accord 5th gear, in your opinion, be along the lines of what I'm looking for? I like to do what a lot of "Noobs" don't, that is RESEARCH. Also, this isnt the first car I've built. I've been a mechanic for 12 years. In the past it's been mostly V8s.

well the carbed gears are spaced further, and you said you wanted a longer 5th gear for the highway, so that should be the perfect match.

Good. Research complete, I'll wait until I pull the motor for rebuild and do the tranny at the same time. May as well get the parts now though. Thanks again for the link Prophet.

Well the 5th gear part of my research is complete. I'm always looking for better ways to do somthing.
Example: Just finished reading a thread where dude used a '86 tempo dizzy on his A20. I've been looking for ignition timing control that didn't involve using a BTM. MS can do ignition timing, I just don't have a dizzy that will allow it. Now I have a new direction to research on my ignition issues.

afaik, carbed and fi trannies are the same gears EXCEPT the final drive is longer in teh carbed tranny... I do know for a fact that a lude si tranny has shorter gears in 3rd 4th and 5th compared to fi and carbed accord trannies. If you want a longer 5th you should use a complete carbed accord tranny, which actually isnt soo bad because 1st and 2nd are a little longer than the fi tranny and lude tranny (i believe fi accord tranny and lude si tranny are the same 1st and 2nd gear and final drive possibly) and will help with traction. So a carbed tranny is probably your best bet if you want a longer 5th

The lude does spin the tire (right one only) all the way through first, and the first couple hundres RPM of second. So take off is also an issue. I've been searching for a Phantom Grip, or something similar, to resolve this problem. I'll look around and see what I can get a carbed tranny for. If I don't like first and second I can always put the lude gears back, and just use the accord fifth. Thanks.

I found a carb tranny for $250, but I think I'll keep looking. I probably can find one cheaper. What about clutch and flywheel, are they the same, or will I need to buy a different flywheel, clutch, and pressure plate to go with the carb tranny?

it should work. just hit up a junkyard. Youll have to do alot of work yourself, but even if you get it rebuilt you should save some money.
