    tightening timing belt?

    from the How-to section

"How to change your timing belt...

    2) Install the timing belt with slight tension between the spockets and on the forward facing side. With the belt tensioner bolt loose, slowly rotate the crankshaft counter clockwise for a distance of three teeth.

    3) Tighten the belt tensioner bolt."

    *******

i've got a whining sound coming from the engine compartment.... i'm thinking my timing belt is too tight? it came right after i loosened timing belt bolt, did some other work, and retightened it after a few days.

in terms of "counting three teeth" literally, from the adjustment procedure recommended above, i can't actually see the crankshaft teeth when doing the adjustment (Because the timing belt cover is still on there). i'm just trying to get rid of the whine w/o having to take the cover off.

about how far around in one circle (360 degrees) is the equivalent of "three teeth"? would that about 1/6th of a turn? like 60 degrees? or more, or less..... not sure.

knowledge on this would be greatly appreciated!

It's the teeth on the cam gear that you should be counting, not on the crank. Did you change the tensioner when you did the belt?

If it doesn't spin smoothly it is. The extra tension on the belt makes a worn tensioner more noticeable. Chances are that's where the noise is coming from.
