    A/C Blower Not Cutting It!

My '84 Accord sedan just can't push enough air on a hot day! My A/C guy checked it out and he thought that the blower was giving her all. Little doors under the dash are up to snuff, he says the motor resistance is good. I am not sure if checking resistance is a good way of telling if the fan motor RPM is where it should be. Any ideas, previous experiences, suggestions?

    Evaporator has been de-leafed...

    Thanks for the reply!

I don't know if it is possible on those cars, but if the motor is wired backwards, it will push about half the air as normal. Some aftermarket motors don't come with the connector attached, so it is a possibility that someone hooked it up wrong. Try hooking it up to battery voltage. On 86-89 the blower switch and resistor control the motor voltage through the ground, which seems a little backwards to me...

Man, I'm with you. I deleafed my blower and hoped it would push more air. No dice. I've wanted to put a 90-3 Accord (or newer) blower in there cuz those push some air. Of course, fitment would be the issue. I think your blower is fine; they were just not super strong to begin with. I feel your pain.

Re: A/C Blower Not Cutting It!

One thing I may do is to unplug the connector at the motor and check the voltage at the connector at max speed setting. If it ain't 13.8 I will have to see if I can find a way to direct wire it somehow...

The A/C dude had suggested I take the motor out and get it rewound for a higher RPM, but he also said I might end up pulling more amps, which would mean I would have to stoutify the wiring...

My blower motor is pretty weak too. Maybe some nice dark tints will help keep the car cool?

Re: A/C Blower Not Cutting It!

    Question to ALL;
Is there any insulation provided from the factory that lies between the headliner and the inner surface of the roof?
I may add something up there to kill the heat burning through...
Also, glass tinting is big in the south and I suppose it helps keep everything cool.
Also, I use a fantastic dash protector made by a California outfit - http://www.canvasworks.com/ - go to HeatShield. Military strength heat shield that fits your windshield PERFECTLY.
Also, check out www.usstuff.com - great site for US made stuff.
I would love to adapt a blower to mount on the interior intake to the existing blower so I could BOOST the existing blower for really hot days - about 95 deg. F and up, which we are getting now.
    Thank GOD for FREON!!!

Re: A/C Blower Not Cutting It!

Am I supposed to get same voltage 12.8 something (I know its kinda low) with every speed settings at the blower connector? Or am I just retarded?

I am pretty sure the voltage you get at the motor connector will be lowest at the FLOW setting on the fan speed knob, and as you increase the fan speed by turning the knob up each detent, the voltage goes up, thus speeding up the fan motor. I am assuming the maximum fan speed would be at the car's battery voltage, and I am assuming the alternator is giving the battery about 13.8 V.

Re: A/C Blower Not Cutting It!

Doesn't Honda put the switch on the ground though? So when the fan speed is adjusted via the switch, it's actually putting resistance on the ground? That would mean that unless you're testing voltage on the same ground that the fan is using, you'll always see 13.8v?? Or am I completely wrong on this one?

yYea I think the resistance is controlled on the ground side for fan speed.
Have you tried moving the slider knob on the dash some? the little thing there by itseld between the middle vents? That made a huge difference in the blow factor on both my Hondas

I am ASSUMING the resistance is before the fan, not after. I guess there's only one way to find out, but I would rather drink a beer and forget about it till later...

You should upload it to a site like Photobucket first, then they give you a link after it's uploaded that you copy and paste into your message.

Ouch! Those look just like mine... No air eh? Most of the plastic arms on the vacuum actuators are broken on my car... Look up underneath the dash and make sure that everything is together. Do you ever hear clicking from the vents when it's on a certain setting?

Re: A/C Blower Not Cutting It!

Have not heard the clicking...she blows, just not enough for a back seater to notice.

I found a squirrel cage blower on a surplus web site that puts out about double the CFM that the stock one puts out, but adapting it means no outside air. But, in Houston, outside air can kill ya after a while. And, with four windows to crank down, it is almost like have a convertible in the shade. So, my next mission after the carb attack might be a new blower.
