    AC Problems

Whats up 3Geez. I was trying to recharge my ac and I turn the car on and started the ac on high. While I was trying to recharge it the engine stalls out. Another thing that happens was the belts started smoking while the ac was running. My car would not turn over when the ac was on. When I turned it off it started with no problem and the belts stop smoking. Can anyone lead me in the right direction to fix this problem?? Thanks in advance. Peace.

the a/c clutch is on the compressor it's the part that belt rides on.
You can either replace the whole assembly (compressor and clutch) or you can try to find just the a/c clutch only.
Either way you will need to know which compressor you have on the car.

    Re: AC Problems

As Picopop has suggested the A/C clutch may be the problem. But where things seem to turn better with the A/C off I have to wonder about the possiblity of the compressor itself being at fault.

A couple, well ok more than a couple, of random questions about what started this to gain a little bit of history on the problem. What were the symptoms that were causing you to recharge the A/C system? Did the system have R12 or R134a in the system prior to your recharge? What were you trying to put in it R12 or R134a? How much had you put in when the lockup problem started? Was a conversion from R12 to R134a being done when things started to lockup? Was the system completly empty of refrigerant when you started the recharge? If so what about compressor lubricant (oil), did you add any or did the cans of refrigerant have oil in it? And of course the question Pico asked, what kind of compressor is it, Keihin or Nippondenso?

They can have my Accord when they pry the steering wheel from my cold dead fingers.

    Re: AC Problems

I went to my Base Hobby shop and had all the refridgerant that was r-12 drained out and the mechanic told me that it was none in there and ran a test on my ac for leaks and every thing checked out okay. I am not sure what kind of compressor it is. But I am thinking whatever the car came with originally. I have had to fix alot of things on this car. I have owned it since feb of this year. I am just trying to get my moneys worth and I want this car to last me for a while since I dont like car payments . The problem started when I was retrofitting the ac for r-134 with the ez chill kit from wal mart. How can I find out what kind of compressor is in my car?? Thanks for the feedback fellas.

Look at the center on the clutch. If it has a 10 mm bolt that holds the clutch to the shaft, it is Denso. If it has a stud and nut, It is the Keihin. It sounds like the compressor has seized, chances are it's the crappy keihin.

Before you charge your A/C you need to have the system sucked down with a vacuum pump. This does two things; it removes the air from the system and also boils out any moisture, both are bad. Air causes pressures to be too high to effectively cool. Second, you need to charge the system from the low side, making sure that when you charge to not pull any liquid into the compressor. This will cause the problem you explained(Hydrolock of the compressor).Third, you only need the factory weight specification for your system. This is one area where more is not better. A slight undercharge will actually cool a lot better than a slight overcharge. Either you temporarily hydrolocked your compressor or the compressor is locked up permanently.
My other car gets about 6 miles to the gallon.
