My favorite part is that they did away with the hated timing belt in favor of a chain. That would have saved me about $1,500 over the life of my Accord - so far, until the next T/B change.

Also noticed the additional maintenance conveniences:

    Externally accesible water pump
Single serpentine belt instead of three separate belts

...aka replacement for the d-series engines. and messy, no engine mounts for this engine and it's dbw throttle. also, it mounts like the k-series (aka "backwards"), and only makes 140 hp. for all that trouble, you might as well go b18b, it'd be much easier. and you'd have more power and plenty ways to extract even more with all the parts available for the b-series. or if you want to do all the trouble converting your bay and wiring up dbw, you might as well get a real k-series. getting an r18a swap would be like swapping a d16 instead of a b18.

Jup... Easier to swapaH22 then a k20... thats for sure, but anyways, what does it take to do this swap??? any clue? I mean K20. If manifold is backwords then firewall must be modified!?

Well I don't know if I'd call it the D-series replacement.

I would think the new L-series would be the D replacement. Similar displacement and power output.

eh, shouldn't be that hard to mount it. you might have to notch the bottom of the firewall, maybe the rear crossmember for the exhaust. it's also a tall engine, so you might have to do stuff with the hood. mounts shouldn't be too much of a problem if you have a competent welder. axles can probably be experimented with as well. you have to modify fuel system too because it uses a non-return fuel system. shift column might have to be messed with as well. battery relocation, maybe a civic half-size radiator to give extra clearance for the intake manifold. get an a, a3 or a2 throttle body so that way, you can still run the throttle cable. because z1/z3 use dbw. also, you have to wire up the guages, since k-series uses electronic odometer. that's the main hurdles i can think of at the moment.

well, i meant more in terms of vehicle they slapped it into than in output per se.

lol, the new civic is a big and heavy car. not the civic of yesterday, that's for sure. hence the fit to replace it. a fit si with a k20 from the factory would be dope.

    Re: New engine from Honda

While the R18A does not rely on traditional VTEC mechanisms to deliver a broad torque/power band, it instead exploits the principle of intake tract resonance to deliver more or less the same result - that of merging two different though relatively narrow torque curves together to a combined curve that is delivers high torque across a much broader rpm band. This is achieved from the new intake manifold which features two sets of intake runners (from the plenum), effectively a variable length intake manifold.

My bro's got a civic and its not "slow as balls". Yeah i know its not balls to the walls fast but it sure as hell faster than a 3g. Its an LX with a 5speed, powers smooth and linear. But yeah for the trouble it would be better to swap in a B18 or better yet build an A20. Still though it is a neat engine, good read
No more 3G but that doesn't mean i cant look at yours...
