Trailing arm differences

Well I tried to start my rear brake swap today and apparently the rear trailing arms on my 86 are different than the ones one the newer models. My arms have four holes in them and the end is flat. From looking at pics the arms on the newer model only have two and are shaped slightly different at the end, So I can't finish my brake swap and I won't have time to go get the parts for a week or so. I remembered that 87lxiaccord had this problem when he had to replace his rear arm after it was bent.

I thought I would post this because I don't remember reading it anywhere in the sei brake swap threads. It sure would have saved me a headache if it was in one of the threads.

I was too. I guess I'll have to get a few comparison pics to show the differences. If pic-n-pull still has several accords there I'll have to get a good look at all of them to see what year/trim has the different arms. The weird thing is, is a that when i ran my vin through Slhondaparts.com it listed the same part number for my arms as it did for the Se-i. Their obviously not the same though. My guess is that the 86s have them and 87 and up all have the different design, since 87lxiaccord pull one from a 86 lxi and it didn't work.

hmm, really. good thing i didn't throw out those se-i trailing arms, then. i'll definitely keep them now at least until i do my install. gl on getting some ore. picopop says picnpull is 1/2 off this weekend, that should make your life happy.

I used my 86 hatch trailing arms with the first rear disk swap I did. They worked perfectly. I wonder if the sedan and hatch have different arms.

Ok i just read through the thread, you have it wrong. The arms are the same. You only use two bolt holes on the trailing arm. Did you get the bracket to attach them to the arm. That's what makes the arm work universally

Yeah I have the brackets, if its the one in the last pic i posted right above the two spindles. When I had all four bolts in the bracket didn't fit, and later i tried to just use the two holes on the end but it seemed like I really had to force it to get there since I had already connected the lower control arms. It was getting late though and hard to see. I'll have to give it a try tomorrow see if it works.

I also compared the distance of the center of the wheel bearing on the drum to that of the disk brakes and when i had it in the last two holes the spindle was farther back than the drum was. If it bolts up farther back i don't have a problem with it giving me extra wheel base, I was just concerned about it not being centered in the wheel well.

Well I tried the rears again today and it was still a no go with the arms. The bracket that goes on the back doesn't fit on the back of the arm either, so hopefully picknpull is open tomorrow so I can finish the swap. I got both fronts done today, so I just have to do the rears, the master cylinder, and the proportioning valve.

It mightbe ok if the bracket that goes on the oposite side of the trailing arm is diff than the 86 one you have.Did you use the legend rear caliper bracket or modified AEM?

Thanks, I'll be sure to hit you up next time I'm down that way. I'm Running the legend rear calipers since I didn't feel like modifing the the aem bracket and its bigger.

AEM Rotors? they look awesome man.

yeah the 86 ones won't work because the bracket from the se-i has a bend in it for those two longer studs. The 4 86 studs are the same length.

I went and pulled the trailing arms this morning and I got a few comparison pics when i got to the house. I also noticed that there was another 86 in the yard with the same arms that i had, and that the 87 and 2 89s i saw had the different arms that would fit the discs. So they must have changed the arms for the 87-89s.

I got a few different angles to help see the differences. The cleaner trailing arm is the correct one for use with the disc brakes.

I had the passenger side finished and had started on the drivers side and then i was greeted by this.


But i just moved to a dry spot and kept working until there was nothing left to do, and it started raining harder so i cam in. When/If it quits raining I'm going to go out and swap the Master cylinder and proportioning valve.

Yes, they are AEM/Powerslot rotors.

Oops, I forgot to check that when i put them on, guess I'll have to switch them before i take the car down off the jack stands. I just grabed a rotor and through it on there to get it done with since i haven't driven the car in over a week now.

The fittings in the proportioning valve wouldn't budge last night so i soaked them in more PB blaster in hopes of them coming loose easier when i get some time to work on it. If not I guess I'm going to have to learn to do hard lines since the only other way i see of getting them off is cutting them.

When I would like it to be done and when its going to be done are two different things, since I don't have a lot of spare time between work and school to work on it. I was hoping to have it done by Sunday for autox but that doesn't look like it will happen unless god loosened those fittings on the proportioning valve, other wise it looks like i might get to do some work with hard line which I'm not really looking forward to even though it probably won't be hard.

Are they stripped? You use a flare nut wrench? If all else fails vise grips tighteed to hell will break em loose. Just use a prybar or screwdriver to keep the prop vale from moving. I know those are easy to strip/break so you migh not want to go that route.

Their not stripped yet but yes I'm using a flare nut wrench, or ANSI is what the package said i believe. I tried a pair of vise grips on one it didn't budge though. I'll probably give them another shot tonight if i feel like it. I already have a double flare tool if i have to cut them off to redo the lines.
