    several problems w/ my lx-i

i have several problems with my '89 lx-i and i don't know where to start. first off there's a loss of power when accelerating. it takes an ridiculous amount of pressure on the pedal to accelerate. and the next problem is after driving for a bit and coming to a stop smoke can be seen coming from the engine. i thought it was oil leaking from the valve cover, so i changed the gasket, but the smoke is still there. if anyone can provide some insight on these problems it would be greatly appreciated.

When was the last time the car was tuned up? what was done in the tune up? plugs? fuel filter? etc.

As far as the oil goes, you could clean off the engine and then run it to see where its coming from..i know my car leaked like crazy from the oil pan gasket...

well i changed the spark plugs & wires some time last year and i checked them today and they seemed to be fine, i may need to change the distributor cap though. now that you mentioned to the fuel filter, i'm definitely gonna have to change that. thx for the suggestions.

What brand of gasket did you go with? Did you use sealant at the corners? I used a felpro and within a few weeks it leaked directly over #2 and #3. Second time I used a little silicone right over them, It's been over a year and a half and no leaks.

mmm maybe take a look at your thermostat i cant really go into detail on how to do that because im not that experienced with it but it seems like it could be an issue. might as well check out the sensors too
cops like pulling me over, or does my car actually look this bad?

well, if you have a lot of miles on the engine, your may have low compression. that will rub a lot of power. also, you can do engine oil flush to get rid of sludge and other things, but i don't recomend since you can open up a whole can of trouble with it.
change the distributor cap and rotor button. get vacuum tester and test vacuum advance on distirbutor. if it doesn't hold the vacuum on both ends ( one at a time) your distributor may not be advancing timing when it needs to be. also check your timing.

Keep checking on your oil level and worry about the oil leaks later. You can do a search on here under "oil leaks" and find plenty of advice. Basically, our engines leak from the valve cover gasket, the oil pan gasket, the distributor, and (most likely) the oil filter housing gasket and the oil filter gasket.

I assume the check engine light is not on? There are many things that could be not right, and you'll have to go after them one by one until you find out what the problem is. How many miles on the car? Your converter could be plugged.

A clogged catalytic converter will cause a loss of power and backpressure in the crankcase, which leads to blow-by and possible smoke from the engine. If you check the cat with an infra-red thermometer, it should be way hot. Sorry, I don't know an exact temp.

    Good luck,
