    Question Vehicle speed sensor?

Hello again. i can't seem to keep my cel off so here goes. driving i let off the gas and let the engine brake the car for more than 5 sec. the cel comes on with a 17? is this normally how they act when they go and which part do i change? i tried the amplifier and the little circit on it. is it the pulser? i can't find my meter to test it. Also which part acctually determines the speed cause i think the 86 had 13's on it and my 88 has 14's so i'm hoping to only replace the part i have to
    Greatly appriciate any help.

the manual is kinda vague about what the sensor looks like and i can't find the answers pertaining to these questions

yes speedo works fine pretty sure the wires are right now. i'm gonna check the diagram for that now. tried changing stuff out but no luck all but the pulser i'd change that to but i want to keep the odometer reading
checked online manual only shows three wires mine has four?

    Re: Vehicle speed sensor?

I've had issues in this area before and while searching i found this.
    https://www.3geez.com/forum/attachmen...6&d=1055979906

i know the pic may not be accurate but is the one one the right(a) supposed to have that wire on it it's on the left(b) on mine now because it was causeing odd idle problems maybee i'll change the whole speedo cluster and wire it that way see if that works...

swap the whole cluster if you have a spare, Make sure its out of the same model that you own too.

    Re: Vehicle speed sensor?

both my other 3g's are autos
I tried swaping the pulser from one and the speedo went nuts reading about 3x what i was going. tested the wire to the ecu it's good. swapped the little circuit board and the yellow lightbulb looking sensor under the pulser and nothing i guess it's the pulser itself oh well of to the j/y again

    Re: Vehicle speed sensor?

Isn't the speed sensor bolted to the top of tranny? With power steering hoses going into and out of it? It's covered in the power steering section of the shop manual (p. 18-12 in the '89 manual).
Just out of curiosity, is your power steering acting strangely as well? That would also indicate a speed sensor problem.

    Re: Vehicle speed sensor?

Thats the same thing i asked. yes one on the tranny to control the P/S and one inside the dash to control speedo actually should have said vehicle speed sensor (VSS)

Anyone: since i'm posting, the VSS from an auto work on a stick?

    Re: Vehicle speed sensor?

The thing on the trans only spins the cable.

My guess is that the pulser could be dead. Get a meter and check it. The procedure is in the shop manual.

    Re: Vehicle speed sensor?

Which part IS the VSS? the whole thing behind the speedo? i'd like to keep my original odometer kinda proud of it...

or this yellow thing? only things with wires on them connected to speedo or is it in the dash or just the name for the whole assembly?
