    NEED HELP! Tranny blew up!

    Hey guys,

My tranny just blew up and i was wondering if there are any differences in the manual transmission between 86-89 that i should know about before i got and buy one from a scrap yard.

I know that 88-89 civics have a different spline count than the 90-91. I hope this is not the case with our A20's.

    Thanks, Any help greatly appreciated.

There is no difference between 86-89 Transmissions when it comes to them fitting and working.

The only difference is between DX/LX (Carb) and LX-i/SE-i (PGM-FI) Transmissions is The Gearing on LX-i/SE-i is shorter then the gearing on the DX/LX Transmissons, So if Acceleration is your main thing, get a LX-i/SE-i Transmission, If Fuel Economy is your Main thing, a DX/LX Trans May be for you

But otherwise ANY 1986-89 Accord Manual Transmission Will work on ANY 1986-89 Accord

    Also,
85-87 Prelude Si 5 speed will bolt in also, and is the same gearing as the LXI/SEI trans but gears 3 4 and 5 are significantly shorter than the stock accord gears. This is only fuel injected Si prelude, the carb trans will not work

Well isn't there something about needing to use the smaller flywheel and Clutch from the Lude donor car though?

that and the splines are different on the axle shafts or somthing. I believe the bolt pattern is the same though... so it gets tricky

yeah a good fuel injected tranny works...but for me i wanted the shortest gears possible.

i actually went with a DX/LX trans because the final drive is longer, so i have a more useable 1st and 2nd gear, esp on street tires

The trans from the 1.8L Preludes (DX) is smaller than all of the 2.0L transmissions, so you need the smaller clutch/flywheel. The axle splines are also different. The gears are shorter as well but the final drive is taller, so not really much difference.

Accords are way more common anyway so you may as well just stick with those.

wow, lots of info on this topic guys, great thread for future refernece thats forsure.

However, I feel like a total dumbass because i found that the transmission was fine AFTER i swaped a new one in. The problem was the driveshaft, it was too short thus came out of the tranny.
