    Exclamation Tach Jumping when starting

    1986 accord ex-i fuel inj originaly auto now standered, So i have a odd problem, my tach jumps up to 2500rpm -3000rpm when starting . Happens the most when its cold out(-18c) but can happen when its hot also, intermitante problem, i have tested the starter and its ok, leaning toward a distrubutor or timing problem, not really sure any help would be great thanks

    most likely either distributor or coil. Listen to the engine when its running, if it sounds like you have a small rock kicking around in the distributor then you know its bad.

    when that happens, it is 99.9% distributor with coil all together. It is a combination.

    Start the car in the dark and watch around the coil for arcing, or anywhere for that matter.

    Burned out insulation on the wires, carbon tracking on the coil to a low voltage terminal or ground, carbon tracking on the distributer cap to ground, cracked distributer cap, basically any HT ignition fault to ground.
