how do we set the timing?

well, im getting closer and closer to getting my car running. just have a fueling issue to deal with. anyways, i looked at the how-to section, but it didnt have a thread on how to check or adjust timing. i already searched, but it didnt come up with anything useful for me.

does anyone here know how im supposed to adjust the timing? i know the timing marks are on the flywheel, but what is the little point on the transmission casing actually for, and what am i aiming to do with he timing light? is my idle speed supposed to be at a certain RPM as well while in neutral?

unplug vac advance hoses and plug them. connect timing light thingy to #1 spark plug wire. loosen the two bolts on the distributor, where it connects near the head(one is towards front of car, other is on the bottom). aim light from the timing gun at the little whole on the tranny where the timing marks are, the needle thing points at what the timing is set at.
i beleive... if its carbed, set it at 16ish. FI set to 26ish.
