Shouldn't be any gap...i think the ball joint is telling you something.

the wheel is lifted off the ground so there is no weight on the control arm, I have the jack on that knot thing in the middle of the car axle assy
What side is this? If this is the right side then the ball joint is installed incorrectly, it should be on the other side. I can't remember how the left side is.

Well hopefully its just the nuts loose.
Other wise there's a good chance the taper in the arm has been wallerd out and the tie rod won't seat right. My Chevy buddy did that to his front end let the ball joints wobble for ever. It messed up the taper but luckly they sell oversized ones for dingy people like him.

both sides look like that, as far as symptoms ...there are no noises or the rear end of the car does not wander. The mesh wheels did rub the tires in the back a good bit though. I just happen to notice this when I swapped out wheels until I get a matching set of tires for the front.
i also got to get around replacing my bushings and ball joints.

This is what mine looks like. I got out there in the bitter cold,40 degree weather and snapped this for you. Both sides look the same on mine.

thanks Old blue
I will try tightening them first. I have that car parked for now and have been working on the 86 DX , fixing things as I drive it everyday. The rear ball joints on it were squeaking terribly, and had a bit of movement. I drilled the end caps and put in zerts, greased them up, they seem fine now.
I like yours, those must be moogs or did you add the zerts?

those are from here.
I added in the zerk on one side to see if the joint would last longer and its has. The side WITHOUT the zerk has some slop in it after what 2 years? of use maybe 30k miles at the most. The side with he grease fitting is nice and tight and you can see how good the boot looks. I would consider it a successful mod.

I didn't really worry about it to much. That cap on top is very thin so I just drilled and used a magnet to pull out what shavings I saw. The fitting is threaded in but I did not tap it the metal is so thin and the threads are so course you might get 2 threads in there.
I plan on doing them all now once I get a new rear ball joint and I might have the rear arms powered coated while Im at it. I have them set where I like now.

This is probably to old of a thread any more but ill ask anyway, is it possible to re grease our front ball joints and if not would it be possible to a zerk to the front lower joint?
The axle kinda blocks access with a drill but you can put one in if you can get to it , use a 90 or 45 degree zert though.
