    Busted Rod

Well i removed the oil pan and head today and found a shattered, smashed or broken rod, take your pick, but it definitely needs replacing.

Need to fix/replace the crankshaft, pistons and rods any suggestions.

something was ill about that motor to begin with by the looks of it, I see hone marks (good thing) on the cyl wall, yet there is a nasty groove cut it it (bad) like no oil pressure

It seems that the rod bearing went out and the flakes got sucked up into the oil pump which seized the oil pump and then striped the teeth off the timing belt. The cylinder wall of the broken rod is was worse then it looks like in the pic as i noticed today

    Shit son!
Looks like a good time to rebuild the whole engine. If your cylinder walls are scored pretty bad, you'll need to bore it out. Try to get the least amount of bore to restore the finish, at .020 - then last at .040 thousandths of an inch. Same way with the crankshaft. Either way, it might be more machine work than it's worth, rather than a used block that can be honed.

    Re: Busted Rod

if you are just using the car to DD id call around to the local junkyards and find a decent used motor to freshen up (timing belt, water pump, plugs, etc)....

Like I said, you'll end up spending more money trying to save what you got than what's it worth. Used motor, agree with ^ sponge bob.

How did this happen anyways? I would just get a decent motor like cubert said and call it a day.

    Re: Busted Rod

that motor is a boat anchor. look at the bottom of the screwed cyl, isn't that melted aluminum? if it is for some reason that cyl ran way too lean or preignition and melted the piston, look at the bottom of the piston, isn't it melted? that cyl is way beyond reboring anyway, look how deep those gouges are where the busted end of the rod was digging in

Throw that block in the garbage. Some of those dents are .050-.060 deep.

Is it just me or do all those pistons look like they got fucking hot? Did the car run out of oil or overheat or something? Oh and that Figaro's pizza looks like it's FTW.

    Re: Busted Rod

Yeah I'll be going to Pick N Pull to look at a few motors. When i first pulled the piston out it was kinda dark and i had crap all over my hands so i couldn't see or feel anything and thought i was good to go. When i got home today i removed the crank and other pistons before even checking it out again

That's impressive. I think there should be a carnage thread on this board somewhere. This would be right up with the best of them.

I think Pick-n-Pull might even give you a few bucks for the scrap value of the old motor.

    Re: Busted Rod

I'm think that ill get a used motor and pull the head and oil pan to change the main and rod bearings and head gasket cause last time i was there there wasn't a single motor that didn't have a leaky head gasket. Also probably do the head too.

    Re: Busted Rod

I found a a20a3 motor that has been driven and compression test for $450 with 30 day warranty and $350 with out the warranty. The only thing its missing is the distributor.
Or i can get a motor from pick and pull for $150 and get a re ring kit for $280.
