Radio reception problems

Ever since I've owned my car, my radio reception has been sub-par. I have the original factory deck and speakers.

I don't get AM radio at all. FM is okay, but I need to be much closer to the source of the signal to get a decent reception.

What can I do to fix this? I have a manual antenna, since the 87 HB didn't have the power one as an option.
