    black box, high idle.

ive always wondered what this black box it ive looked inside it and i'm stumped. its the box that has all the vaccum lines going in. on my car there are only 4-5 vaccum lines going into it.

this probably has nothing to do whatever is in that black box but i have a really high idle, it hovers around 2000-2500 when its cold when its warm it seems to be 1500-2000. im trying to find a vaccum leak but i cant seem to find one. it started to happen after i took the carb off(maybe its leaking around the base?).

I'd suspect a vacuum leak at the baseplate, or a vacuum line that was hooked up wrong/forgot about. Also make sure you didn't somehow bugger up your throttle cable or linkage, on the secondary side too.

Time for an aftermarket carb. Can you find adapter plates for Webers? You can pick up rebuilt Holley 5200s that bolt on to the Weber flanges for around $60, adapter is about $40 usually. Should be a bit cheaper than that for you even, since your funny money is worth more than ours.

the thing is it seems like i would need a whole manifold from a 1.8 considering my manifold is totally different. i have a spare rebuild original carb so if worst comes, i will try that. ill have to rip the old carb off and look at everything. i know that the 1.8 vacuum is totally different but does anyone have a vacuum they can scan and i can just look at.

I'll scan in some vacuum diagrams here this weekend. It will be a mind-twisting experience for you.

Just an idea, my black box has a sticker on it that actually states which line goes to what. Does yours?

alright i got it running pretty good. the gas in the car is over a year old so im sure that doesnt help. once i get some fresh gas in there it should be all good. i like the fact that the canadian version only has like 4 vaccum lines compared too the 1.8, that would be mind boggling.

    thanks mkymonkey

Lucky its not an automatic with California emissions. That adds at least 5 or 6 vacuum lines.

After 24 years, taint no damn way you will ever get the car to run like new without first tossing every hose and what is hooked on at each end.
