should there be any play with the valve springs?

ahh. no. what is it the engine doing power wise? if it is has play your retainers( two locking pieces that hold the spring in place) are probably gone right?... how much play?

there should be zero "0" play in valve springs on any motor.... if theres play... you got problems.. broken or severely worn springs. even if your missing 1 retainer clip there should be no play even tho it will fly apart soon shortly after.
