    Unhappy Time of Death...

    218,000 miles....

Sad to see it go like that... Such a happy motor, but good things must come to an end.

On a good note! I can probably get a better motor for really cheap, because the Junk Yard has about 10 3G's.

If I buy a $400 motor, I'll only be in about $600 for a very reliable and fun car. Plus, I can go to the track assured that I will make it home.

Time to start looking for 88-89 LXi's!!
But I have to ask. Should I get a long block or complete Lxi motor? Would it be hard going to EFI from a DX??

    Re: Time of Death...

It would be much easier to find a good LX-i. If you are willing to swap our the entire engine harness as well as the one under the dash then it may be easy. I cannot remember if you need to run a fuel return line or not, there may be one already on the DX but I doubt it.

You would still have to run the same things as you would for the LX-i swap except I believe you get rid of the black box.

Sounds like my next project unless I want to go with a weber or Holley 600.

WTF! How far a drive is that from the Oregon border?? I wish I could find one that cheap!

Oh... NVM... I thought you lived in Cali like everyone else.

Lol... The "Pick and Pull" across town from these guys wanted $650, then he was like, I can let it go for $400, and I was like, dang it... I need one for $300, and he said $350... But he doesn't know the miles...

The guys with the one for $350 said the engine had 108,000miles and they could just give me the long block.

That's happend a couple times in our samurai, but I don't think there are any R&P gears in FWD trannies.

    Ok.
I got the motor home! Looks pretty dirty, so I bought a couple cans of degreaser...

IF ANYONE needs EFI parts. I have the EFI intake complete. No I don't have an extra Dizzy, they took it.

Ok... I got the new engine all shiny, so I can start looking at how I should pull this thing.

After a little reading, I was disapointed that I had to remove the tranny as well... I guess it will be getting a royal degreasing, too!

It should be out tomorrow... I have to help G-ma at her house, then it's back to the lab again, Yo!

I wish... I can't even afford the motor!

I would like to use the dowpipe that came with it, but it was cut right after the Y and I don't know if the exhaust people want to deal with it or not... I guess I can take that downpipe and an old flexpipe down and see what they can do with it.

Webers are crazy expensive around here. I might just have to put a 4 bbl on it and see how it performs.

Well... I got it in... Got it wired up and hoses routed.
Didn't start right up like I wanted, so I'ma try again in the morning... I think it is very flooded, so I pulled the plugs out for the night. Hopefully it will start up tomorrow!

I'm anxious to see myself. I haven't got the head off the old engine yet. Hopefully it is just the bottom end and not the top.

    Re: Time of Death...

IT RUNS!!! Fired right up after I noticed the carb was dumping as much gas as the fuel pump would push!

I don't know what was going on, but I took my vacuum off the Air Control "B" and put it where I had it before and the gas calmed down enough to fire up! This thing purrrrrrrrs... 150 lbs compression on 3&4, and 175 on 1&2. Hopefully it's just the valves being stubbord after just waking up...

The intake it filthy, so I gonna get a can of Seafoam today and run that through the rest of my half tank and get some down through the carb.

Well, got the head off the old motor... Sure enough! There's about a 1/4" (1.5mm) of play in the stroke of piston #1...

    Autopsy:
The pistons look 218,000 miles old, but I can tell the engine was cared for till then... Valves show no sign of carbon buildup (Seafoam doesn't work??) and acually look really good! I think I can reuse the head if needed, so I'm just gonna scrap the block (I have 3 aluminum blocks, 4 if my A20 is alumnum. About 50-75lbs a piece and aluminum goes for like $.80 a pound... There is my new header!)

Left to do as of 1:45pm:
Power steering belt needs to be put on.
Exhaust manifold needs to go on.
I need to add oil to the tranny.
The drivers side spindle assembly is apart because I needed to put that side in.
VERY bottom tranny mount is disconnected.
    Hood is still off.
Need to check where my leak in the tranny is coming from on the pass. side. Hopefully the CV is not all the way in.
    Starter solenoid switch is unplugged.
    Need to add coolant.
    Speedo cable is unplugged.

Then I need to recheck all my hoses, and I think it will be road test time!

I started on the car at 6p.m. on thursday, Cleaned EVERYTHING I could, and started the new engine at 11:45A.M. today... not bad for an 18y/o all by hisself... Well, thanks to the site, lol.
