89 Accord vs 98 Neon ACR

I love my accord.... but I have an option of picking up a 98 Neon ACR sedan. The interior sucks...but the performance and abilities of a full fledged ACR is undeniable. 130hp, 130ft lbs, 2400lbs, and one of the best handling FWD cars ever made.

Talk me out of it so I stay true to my accord. Please.

130HP is at the crank or at the wheels? In my opinion you would be better off with the Accord. With some bolt ons the Accord may not have as much power, but it will be just as fun to drive.

The ACR is a good car out of the box from what I've read. But if you're going to mod it anyways (shocks, springs, swaybars) then you might as well keep the Accord and not have to replace your head gasket. If you're going to buy it and autocross it and just leave it alone (aside from the head gasket), then the ACR isn't a bad choice.

At the end of the day man, even if its ACR, it's still a Neon. It may seem better now, but with the money spent on the neon you could've MUCH better invested in the Accord. Just my .02$ though, I dont want to keep someone from something they really want. But all in all the Accord is a much better base to build upon. gl with the decision though!

One word, reliability. I'd love to see a neon last as long/take the beating our cars can take and still run well. As I said earlier man, it is just my .02$. If you're all about the neon, then go for it.

Re: 89 Accord vs 98 Neon ACR

I know about the questionable reliablity... but to all the anti neon peeps... have you ever driven a 5spd neon? They're pretty damn quick, stock. Modded, they get pretty fast pretty easily. I've seen neons with just a few bolt ons laying down the hurt on civics, accords, integras all sorts of hondas with all sorts of mods. The neon mill makes quite a bit of torque, which makes it a pretty ballsy (for a 4 banger) engine.

I think for now I'm going to keep the accord, purely because of the interior and reliability. If I had a spare garage though... the neon might win. To all the haters, I suggest you drive one before you rip on it. Chrysler fixed the headgasket issues in 98 with an MLS gasket, and they became little pocket rockets.

My biggest issue with the accord is that it's carb'd. I hate carbs. They get crap mpg, and they aren't that reliable. I'd do the EFI swap, but I don't have a garage to do it in. Does anybody offer EFI conversions? I would pay someone to do it for me.

Mine gets okay mileage. I guess 29mpg while flogging it, 32 if I drive like grandma, is pretty decent...

uhm.. im carbed and i get like 420 miles to a tank when i shift a 2000 RPMS and keep it about 55-60 and i get really good gas mileage.. but hey bro do what you would like to do dont let other peoples opinion restrict you from what you feel you need to do..

man, i really looked into getting a srt-4 for a lil while. the thing is, even tho its (or at least was) the fastest car for under 20k. but yea, when it all boiled down, its still a frikkin NEON. but i mean hey, i have seen some pretty quick ones. besides, they have pretty much looked the same since like 94 or whatever.

One can say the same thing about an accord or a civic... the difference is the SRT4 was actually fast.

And... in terms of looks, I like the 1st gen way more than the 2nd:

    1st:

    2nd gen:

The 2nd gen looks fat, tall and stubby.

Re: 89 Accord vs 98 Neon ACR

my girlfriend has a 2dr rt neon from 1999 and id have to say stock its a pile of crap id much rather have my accord but the neon has a higher aftermarket support rating but with all the parts in the world its still a neon i mean shes got a short shifter cold air intake full exhaust and i still think my stock 2dr 3g has more get up and go when i get the 3g up and going again ill deff let you guys know who is faster but im poretty sure the accord is going to take it but seriously go down the street how many neons do you see and how many 3rd gen accords do you see the thing is i like to be different than all other people on the road and when you see a sick looking 88 honda than a pretty good looking neon going buy who do you think is going to turn more heads you know what i mean but thats my 2 cents

1988 accord lxi SMASHED 225k havent seen it in sooooo long AND GOIN STRONG!!!!!!!

Re: 89 Accord vs 98 Neon ACR

I think the neon is a decent car performance wise , i had a 95 with and intake and exhaust work done ,single cam and it smashed on my friends b16 civic. The main problem i had with the car was the headgasket leaking. Reliabilty goes to the accord hands down but pound for pound performance wise the neon (stock engines in both car with that comment). And a double yes to people ripping on the neons drive one first (must be a 5spd though) you will be surprised i know i was

Neons are great! As long as you get a 5-speed.
