The 2g rack is in and works beautifully. I wound up welding on a 1" extension on each tie rod end, which I cut off the old ends. Much less effort required than a manualized power rack, and gets rid of all that bullshit in the bay.

I've been learning that some material does some really weird shit after being heat treated and then welded.
Anyways I was wondering what is at the other end of the tie-rod, and how hard would it be to build?
Also sorry about the pilot bushing, the material I ordered never showed up, and the "economy" has led to some very strange things happening at work. I really have to apologize for promising that bushing when I really don't have even a spare moment to myself.
I took a file to it, it didn't seem to be anything special, and I did preheat prior to welding. Thanks for the concern though.
Other end of the tie rod? A ball joint where it joins the rack?
It's just tie rod ends with a 1" threaded extension welded to them.
I wound up leaving the bushing out. Like you said, everything seems to work okay. Clutch engaugement seems a little harsh, but that probably has nothing to do with it. Time will tell.

Here's a listing for a set of 2gen Prelude tie-rods, C/W inner joint, if you're interested.
After months of searching, I finally got my hands on a 83 prelude manual rack and was disappointed. The tie rods/rack ends are actually shorter than the 2g and 3g accord, due to the rack being longer... and the brackets don't fit the 3g crossmember.
84-87 Civic/CRX tie rods seem to be the perfect length. I will confirm this tomorrow when I receive them.
Yes I did, they are a little longer than the accord, long enough to work. I'll be putting them on the 2g rack that will go on the SE-i.
I didn't weld the tie rod, just the tie rod end. It's holding up fine...
so, if i read right we can use a 2g rack with the civic tie rods and they will fit a 3g accord with no welding tie rod ends??
Not that it matters to me i have a genuine 3g manual rack.
Yes. You will still need the 2g or 3g manual brackets welded into the crossmember, but that's the easy part. The biggest pain is removing the 3g power brackets without screwing up the crossmember. Die grinder with carbide bit is a must!
thats cool. i wonder if we can make a 2g accord rack work in a 2g prelude aswell
