You don't HAVE to have the proportioning valve, but its recommended.

he should probably invest in the prop. valve since he's not rocking an lx-i, he's rolling a dx.

If you don't get the SE-i propo valve, there won't be any problem. It's just that the brake balance might be off a bit.

Everyone that I've talked to says it doesn't really affect it much.
Running a non SE-i valve won't harm anything. However, if you do not upgrade your front brakes you will need to learn how to control the car under hard braking. This is especially when it rains. The rear end will lock up and you will go into a slide, if you brake hard that is.
