    power steering issues

i realise that my car is indeed a 1st gen but since the power steering on both the 1gen n 2gen are very similar, and the fact that some of the power steering parts i got from the 2nd gen EK, i want to ask for help here...

well my honda has sum issues with its power steering. this is the third pump that went into the car. the first 2 were from 1st geez and had the metal pressure hose. 1st had an awful groaning noise when turning ne direction...thats was instantly junked. the 2nd worked well when i turn to the right bt had a slight groan when i turn to the left. this turned more intense n started to get stuck at certain positions of the steering.

i now have a 2gen pump from an EK with the rubber hose. it looks very similar and mounts the same as well. however this pump required a valve at the pressure hose to prevent back-flow. initially when it groaned on one direction, till i realised i was using the old metal hose. so i installed the rubber hose and valve (EXPENSIVE) and this worked excellently.

now here is the issue. at times when im at around 40kmh, i take a turn and there would be a screeching sound coming from the pump indicating strain. this sound would even come up when doing a light 60degree turn. it isnt loud but it doesnt make sense as i do not here this sound when i turn when the car is stationary. (this is the same sound you would here when you turn the steering maximum either direction on most p.steering early hondas) the steering gets a little heavy at this time. i do know the p.steering is speed sensitive but 40kmh is a little too over-zealous to me. my speed sensor gvs faulty readings, about 10kmh higher than normal. but still at 50kmh it should make this noise. bt i am wondering, is this normal for early p.steering? could it be the speed sensor or the pump? could the 2gen speed sensor fit on the 1g or would the gear be different?

    regards, dev...

I think that there is an extra line on the 2nd gen speed sensor for the power steering that is not on the 1st gen. I don't know where it goes or what it does, but it's possible that it's necessary on the 2nd gen power steering pump. I'd have to look at the diagrams of the systems to know for sure.

well i do suspect that it has something to do with the recoil function of the power steering. mine never recoiled till the new pump went it, making driving the old girl very scary at times ecspecially after fast turns. i cannot let go of the steering for a minute. i suspect it has something to do with the pump giving resistance to the movement hence a gental recoil.

seriously, u guys should try driving a 1g without the power steering. its horrible. the recoil on it can literally dislocate ur arm... i think 80% of the 1g owners in malaysia are looking for the p.steering system to be retrofitted to their cars. most of them just decide to sell their old cars because of this issue. i seems like when a 1g is scrapped, the p.steering system never reaches the crusher as these systems are truely hotttt items. heh...

LOL I've been driving my 1g without power steering for years and my arms are still fine. In fact I prefer manual steering to PS. It might be a little heavy in parking especially with slightly wider tires from stock, but hey I'm fine with that.

Hey do ask around if anyone wants my PS system

    Re: power steering issues

Hehe my dad is 63 and hes fine with my steering lol, but then he rarely drives my car.

I've decided not to get the rack as the guy isn't sure whether its leaking or not. Might as well say its leaking I'm not risking to get another leaking rack and having to spend a fortune to fix. Plus I love the manual rack, especially that heavy recoil feel. Seriously.

I'd love to sell off my PS system I had lying around to fund my interior projects. In fact I have 2 racks in the storage. That could worth something, at least get my seats reupholstered

    Re: power steering issues

i heard from my accesory shop friend who got his entire interior redone in PU(synthetic leather) for as low as RM450. it meant new foam, PU covered door panels as well. not a ba price. but i heard more of around RM500-600 for a decent job, usually done on volkswagens. i have no plans for the door panels but i do plan to redo the seats and perhaps a new carpet. i noe lotsa people in ipoh for stuff like tis if u need help.

neway, how much u planning to sell the p.s. racks? as i mentioned do save a speed sensor for me. hehe... also, as i mentioned u could always get the rack rebuilt for RM250 by my mechanic. even mine dint leak initially bt after installation it did. i feel its coz the O rings hardened after sitting for such a long time. but afterwards it seems all okie...so dont dismiss the new rack k? also if he has the pump and speed sensor as well. to take it as a set...or at least book it... i might have a few buyers looking for em..heh...
