    coin tray inserts (upholstery)

Just made another couple of coin tray inserts for the top of the dash, I thought I would take some pictures through the project. this thread is in two posts.
The trays themselves are made from ABS automotive plastic about 1/8 of an inch. I had cloth inserts, but the cloth gets really dingy after a while. heres the pieces laid out on the material, I used blue tape to mark the areas that need glue.

glue is applied to the material, it has to dry on the material and the part for about 15 minutes. you want it tacky so it sticks. I use delta glue, good stuff but really strong

always mark what side to apply glue too,it's really easy to forget and cover the wrong side.

    glue applied

    parts applied to fabric

    rough cut around material

material trimmed, notice the material is cut in a pinking pattern, this allows it to fold over the edges with bunching up, this takes practice to cut and stretch fabric

looks good Tim. I'm just amazed it took someone else so long to make one of these again. i've had something similar in mine for some 8 years now, and got the idea from Paulie (one of the original members, and pioneers of the modded 3G).

While mine is similar, it's really interesting to see someone make a two-piece like you did there. Take some pics of it in the car, I really wanna see what this puppy looks like.

that is real neat work ...looks good....but I like my coin, parking pass, cup holder, sanwich making, spare screw and butt connector holding TRAY .. lol
so I will just enjoy your inserts in your car. Kinda like a faux air bag.

triple post lol, these just attach in the coin trays on the top of the dash, sorry for the confusion, I think there was some confusion with the pop out one. they looks a lot better then the scratched up beat up ones on the top of the dash, remember my dash will be black when i'm all done, so it's part of the dash. I still need to get another dash from the junkyard, to see if it can be disassembled in some way,if it can, I thought about covering the dash itself.

I wanted to bring up a point, if you try this stuff at home, spend the money to go buy some glue from an upholstery shop, the glue you buy at home depot or walmart, isn't designed for what an automotive interior goes through. it will eventually fail, and you'll have to do it again. and be careful, most pro glues are pretty potent and extremly flammable.

they are the depressions in the top of the dash, under the clock. the notches are for the gauge cluster that replaces the factory clock area.
