um it looks like the stick on fake carbon fiber they sell at walmart. if it's stuck on the surface it just doesn't look right,it throws off the dimentions of the part. it reminds me of a puffy sticker.

Re: anyone have a woodgrain interior?

The carbon fiber isn't making me want to stand up and cheer. Probably because it's just stuck on any old place and doesn't really contribute to the lines inside the car. I own a BMW 540i. It has wood, whereas the cheaper 5-series' did not. Wood was obviously added to an interior that started without it, but was added very tastefully. It accentuates the interior lines. There is a 3" strip around the inside that looks like it belongs there and ties the whole cabin together. The shifter panel is also wood and fits comfortably in its spot. The shift handle is also wood.

This is not my car, but the pic was handy:

I'm trying to think of an equally tasteful way to add wood to a 3g, but I'm not really coming up with anything that would contribute in a meaningful way. I don't see any really good spots to put it where it wouldn't look tacked on and awkward.

That's just my opinion of course. You didn't pay anything for it, so you won't lose money if you ignore it.

i like how it looks in the bimmer. i also agree it can be tasteful if done right. i like CF outside the car but not in. and aluminum or chrome, thats just to gawdy for me. plus wood can be done in many different colors to match and accentuate the interior. like i said im just looking for ideas.

I think c/f can look good if done right, and not just as a stick on laminate. As Tim said, that looks like poop. There's a full radio surround replacement to the plastic bezel in 100% c/f, which looks great when partially painted. It's all a matter of just how much is going in there, and if it works with the look of the interior and it's lines.

i get it, y'all hate a woodgrain 3gee. has anyone seen one or is this based on personal opinion? i would like to see for myself and come to my own conclusion. i was considering fabing up some panels if i liked what i saw, but i get the feeling i wont be seeing any. i value all your opinions on the matter, but really need to see for myself.

no no, I think it could look good. ...but although I haven't been on the board as much as I use to, I can go back easily 8 years and say that I have yet to see a 3G done w/ woodgrain.

i think the best way to get a conclusion is to get a couple of scrap interior parts as cheap as you can do it with them and make a decision based on that.

Yes as said carbon fiber should only be used when making a new whole piece out of it, and not some stick on vinyl or add on crap.

Re: anyone have a woodgrain interior?

i'll tell you where it would look nice, if you make a panel to fit in the front of the cassette holder for gauges, etc, if you had carbon fiber actually laid on the panel, maby I/8 thick aluminum, not stick on,but the read deal, there are places you can send a finished panel too,and they will laminate it with real carbon fiber. also real carbon fiber has a different look then the fake stick on stuff, the stick on stuff has a fake plastic gloss, if you want to do wood inlay,i suggest getting some real panneing, you can buy small sheets of the exotic wood, then cutting and finishing then for the car, this would look much better then plastic laminate. it's really not that hard, you use cardboard poster board to make templates, then you transfer the templates to the panel. this is how i do a lot of my stuff. I thought about the wood, but i'm leather wrapping a lot of pieces instead. I can cover most of the small pieces from scraps at work. When I can manage it, I need to get a couple of yards of the fake black leather,to do the door tops. you need the good stuff that is UV resistant.

this is the panel leather wrapped, if you made a panel like this for whatever reason, you could make the panel and have it covered in real carbon fiber. or make it from hardwood and finish it.

Re: anyone have a woodgrain interior?

I was thinking some more about this tonight. If I were going to incorporate wood in my car, I'd start with a wooden steering wheel and wood shift handle. After that, I'd figure out a way to do wooden door lock handles with wooden door lock collar inserts in the top of the door to match. After that, I might try to make vent louver frames from wood.

I think that would be the trick in the 3g. Make some smaller trim items, odd knobs, etc. out of wood. If you try to add big panels, it will end up looking pasted on and silly.

just don't go too far like this
    here's some of the quotes
"This auction is for a 1983 2 door Datsun Sentra with a custom body kit and spoiler made of wood. It started out with the spoiler and then I just had to make the rest. This car gets more attention than any Ferrari and is pretty famous around here."

    OH.. oh god.

That's both totally retarded and absolutely brilliant at once.

If I met whoever thought that up, I wouldn't know whether to
slap them silly or buy them dinner.

Maybe it gets more attention than any Ferrari because it LOOKS LIKE HELL! I'm amazed they found a way to make that car uglier.

Wow, lurk around someones' journal and look what you find.. I drive past that that car every day during lunch -- the owner is usually driving it home from high-school when I see it... and yes, it is every bit as cool as it looks.

I've talked to him and apparently this is the reason he failed wood shop -- the assignment was to build a bookshelf and instead he built a "bookshelf wing" (a slang derogotory term used in reference to those double-decker rear spoilers seen on way too many Civics and Eclipsen).

The funniest part is that he really can't take it on the freeway in any reliable way because the turbulence around the rear tires has a habit of ripping the rear skirt loose.
