Tire time

Well my 3gee is in need of tires. When I mean in need I mean a stock carb'd 3gee spins in 3rd when its wet. Anyways back on track. Currently I have Yakohama Avid T4's and honestly I am not impressed. The wet traction kind of sucks. I am looking for something cheap yet decent. I am willing to spend $50 for each so let me know what you guys suggest.

1. Are you going to be driving this winter in snow?

1. I need all seasons, but yes it will be driven in the snow.

You may want to lean towards a more winter style tire. If you have to make it to class everyday in bad weather it may pay you dividends later. Most schools up north don't close class unless it is very bad out. I would hunt a small tire shop and see what they selling and look at what other people are running. Cooper was always a popular brand where I came from as well as Mohawks.

It is also not uncommon to have a set of snow tires just for winter as well.

Last thing really might want to consider getting a "winter beater" car and keep you 3 gee nice and salt free. Alotta times you can pick up a cheap car that has passed inspection the last time and someone pawns it off. Scrap prices have dropped alot so there road bombers around im sure. I drove some real trash in the winter times. When i mean cheap I am thinking like 500$.

Well the 3gee is parked for now. I take it out every now and then. I currently drive my BMW and will drive it throughout the winter. However, when the tranny's dies in the BMW I will drive the Honda while I do a swap. So that is why I need some decent tires.

dammit...im trying to remember the last set of all season tires i had...


They were an off brand...for some reason the name reminded me of Motorcraft"...and they were cheap tires...but they lasted forever.


I got them used when i bought my GTI, they lasted a winter on the GTI, then When i got my civic they went on the civic, lasted until I got my Fat Fives, and then went back on the following winter, and I ended up giving them to the kid I sold the civic to.


If anyone knows what im talking about and can help me remember that would be great, because then i could tell Russian what tires I reccomend

Figured it out...these are them. They dont have the exact size you are looking for,but they are awesome wearing tires and are great in the snow. My GTI was pretty friggin low and it got through plenty of bad storms.

edit: have you checked out pepboys? i had bought a set of Futura all seasons from the for dirt cheap and I was plain amazed with how well they tracked in snow. I don't remember specifically what model they were, but I promise you they were the cheapest tire they had in the store at the time (I was a cheap cheap cheap tire buyer at the time.)

I'll never buy anything but Michelins again. I've had Bridgestones. They made my torque converter stop locking up and my mileage go to poop. And they wore out in 50k miles. I have Pirellis now and they ride incredibly rough and wobbly. They'll probably wear out in 50k miles. I've had Vredesteins that were set to wear out in 20k miles before I sent them back.

Get Michelins. They are a little more expensive but will be absolutely transparent for 100k miles. No fuss. No wobbles. No tranny problems. That's real value.

You want go with the directional style tire for more off a all season...Cheap tires your looking at anything from Hercuries,Champiro,Kelly,Good year...all depending what your style is based on and tread wear if u go with a Nokian is a great all season tire or even hankook and kumhos are great also

The Falkens posted by Dark Accord look good to me--I've had good luck with Falken 512s, 912s, and 615s.

Thanks guys. I haven't looked into Kuhmo yet. I know they wear pretty fast, but I haven't noticed that yet on my BMW.

The thing with tires is that generally the harder the compound is, the longer they wear. But for better traction you need a softer compound. So it's a balance. If your suspension and bearings are tight and the alignment is good, any set of tires should last a good while. Unless of course you spin them all the time or brake hard a lot. And even the cheapest set of all seasons will be better than worn out premium tires. Tirerack.com has a large selection and lots of reviews so take a look there too.

Alright I have two suggestions for you... I work @ firestone... firestone recently come out with this new house brand tire its called Primewell... I've been putting them on for a while and every customer has a good review for this tire, its tread design is very unique for all season... feel free to try them...OOOO P.S. Get the road hazard firestone's road hazard protection is awesome... it covers a whole lot. Other than that I have some kumhos on my LX, they are Kumho Power max, I honestly do not know if its a all season tire but they've perform very well for me and yes I have extremely tested them in evey season.
