how many kays it got on it.
o2 sensors are meant to be changed every 60-80 thousandf kays with the old ones like the 3g has.
also check that the o2 sensor wires havnt rubbed through the insulation on anythig and is shorting out

Sounds like a German auto dealer. I was listening to a call-in radio show on a local station a couple of weeks ago, and the host referred to German cars as "missiles from Germany that explode in your billfold." How true. My '04 Passat 1.8T just blew a head gasket (or lunched the water pump which helped blow the head gasket) at 72,000 miles. I went ahead and changed out the timing belt at the same time, as they had to check the water pump anyway ("we have to look at it, VW water pumps tend to self-destruct sooner than they should."). The fix included the oil cooler (we have to look at it, VW oil coolers tend to self-destruct sooner than they should."). It was good to do the timing belt anyway, even though the maintenance calls for replacement at 105,000 miles (we have to replace the timing belt idler pulley, as VW/Audi pulleys tend to self-destruct sooner than they should.").

And so forth. Total bill: $3,180.00. And while I was at the shop, he had to call a customer with an '88 Mercedes 190 and tell him that the reason it wasn't running was that the entire wiring harness needed replacement (bye bye). Seems that Mercedes used some kind of plastic for the wire insulation in a few of those years that is now breaking down deep within the harness. The cars are in effect a total loss, unless you have the time to do it yourself.

I was reminded of what a breath of fresh air it was to get my SE-i 7 years ago. As I have owned quite a few German cars, I was well aware of the heartaches they can cause. So why did I get the Passat? The reason that keeps those guys in business....it goes down the road so nice, and my wife (it's her car), loves it, although not as much as before.

It's so true. I spent $4,000 on my Bimmer in the first two years I owned it. I've come to learn that $4,000 is a very low number, but I was appalled. I was complaining about it when my brother finally asked me why I don't get rid of the car. I said the same thing. It's so smooth and so quiet. When I stamp down the gas pedal, there's no noise, no fuss, no struggle to keep it on the road. There's just a lot of pressure against my back and a lot of scenery whipping by. Every time it sucks another thousand out of my wallet I swear to sell it, but always relent.
