Yeah there screwed in as far as I have heard. Double nut them maybe but its steel on aluminium so theres gonna be trouble. If you can heat up the alum a little it will expand and hopefully help get them out.

Best bet it to try and use what you have it can turn into a mess.

    Re: Header Studs

from waht it sounds like, he's bust half a stud off so double nut might not work.
there are a few stud extractors on the market that work all right.
there are easy out .which are only really usable if the stud is bust off flush.
the ones i like go over the stud and grip the sides of it, but require most of the stud be there to get a decent grip.
but vice grips and a can of wurth rost off ice or similar may be the go if either of the above are out of the question

do you have access to a welder? you can screw on a nut and weld it to the broken off part. then you back it out with a wrench. I got sick of messing with the studs and helicoiled everything. I also went to a 5/16 fine on one end in the head, and 5/16 coarse on the manifold end. thats a common exaust stud. i had to drill the holes in the manifold to make it just slightly bigger. not much.

I drove around for who knows how long with an exhaust manifold nut missing. Never had any noise or other problems.

Yeah I don't have washers on two of mine. I also don't have any flexpipe in my exhaust so it moves the whole exhaust when the engine moves. The exhaust mani is still nice and tight.

I'm finding that a lot of Craftsman stuff is really overbuilt and awkward. I have a deep well impact socket that I use for lug nuts. I can barely fit it into some wheels. It's decidedly thicker than my Harbor Freight sockets. The Harbor Freights are not as strong, but I'm okay with that.

    Re: Header Studs

they should back out without much trouble, just soak them with PB Blaster everyday starting tonight, and by the time Saturday comes around, they'll damn near back themselves out. Mine accidentally came out when I was trying to back the nut off the stock exhaust manny. I was like WTF? Two birds, one stone with that one b/c I had new ones ready to replace the original rusted up ones.
