    Radio Removal.

    Hello all,

I'm thinking of changing the radio on my Accord to something a bit newer. If I could ask a couple of questions:

1 - How do I remove the radio in the first place, without damaging it?

2 - What work in re-wiring is involved?

    Many thanks!
    John.

    hi

    Got to: http://www.autozone.com/addVehicleId...00c1528005f94f

    Autozones online repair info.

I like to buy a plug in harness so I don't cut the original harness but most guys just hack, strip and connect.... my pioneer slid in so nice I never bothered to anchor it in....

    Sorry,
I have a panasonic stereo, not a pioneer.... typo. I bought the harness plug on ebay three years ago for a few bucks. Just picked up a new/used pair of 6.5 speakers to replace the cheapies I mounted then.

Griffonks, that's a really useful site. Thanks for the link. And thanks ghettogeddy for the ebay link - I've bought one of those harnesses. I can't believe how cheap it was: £6.24 delivered to my house here in England. I checked this afternoon at a local audio shop and they quoted me £35 for the same part, if they could find me one.

    Thanks again,
    John.

    Re: Radio Removal.

It will mount OK without using the metal strap on the back of the aftermarket unit, but I like to install them. It was the only thing that prevented some amateur thief from stealing the last stereo I had in the car. The case was still messed up and they took the faceplate. What good will that do without the chassis? IDIOTS. At least this way they didn't rip out the wiring. They got it out of the dash a couple of inches and had to give up.

Hmm... I like the anti-theft way of thinking for sure! The longer it takes them, the more chance they have of getting caught.

I always had the metal strap in every stereo I installed. The strap mounts to some tricky place with funny shaped screws.

    Re: Radio Removal.

I'd rather have them just take my 4yr old panasonic cd unit than tear up my dash. If I get ripped off and buy a better setup, then I guess I'll strap it in.

Last June I brought my 89 LX sedan into Denver from my farm where it was parked for two months and left it at a grocery store parking lot (short of parking space at home). While driving it I noticed wasps buzzing about the passenger side rear view mirror- a nest back in there. Anyway some jerk messed with the car, slapped the passenger mirror in to the glass and guess what!

lmao for a week. It was well worth a trip to the J/Y for a new mirror. I would have payed 10 times the cost of the mirror to see the junior gangsters get swarmed.... maybe I should have moved the nest to behind the stereo!

    Re: Radio Removal.

To remove the radio, remove the centre console insert (cassette tape holder - screws either side), you might need to remove the centre console too - can't remember. Remove the ashtray & remove the ashtray upper plate. You'll now have access to the screws at the back of the radio.

The radio wiring from the US is different & won't fit. I bought the same harness & it's been consigned to a drawer somewhere. If yours does fit though, let me know!

I'm just sticking with stock for just now.

    Re: Radio Removal.

Denhonda, you were abolutely right - that harness isn't quite right. No matter though: it was pretty cheap, and I've fitted the CD player with a little thoughful re-wiring so that I can re-fit the original radio at any time.

I've found out what was wrong with my cassette player as well. The head was absolutely filthy. I cleaned it with a cotton bud and some contact cleaner (took ages), and it works beautifully now.

Ironically, I think I've just found the correct wiring harness on Ebay:

Does that look right to you Denhonda?

It looks correct I have to say, but it would be good to see the actual connector bits if you know what I mean.

All is now good with your ICE it seems!
