APC Breather Filter..

So I've had an APC breather filter over the little piece where air is supposed to get into the crankcase.. I've noticed that it's black.. I just rinsed it off with water and it's still black, and I noticed when I took it off that there was oil around the rubber piece of it.. Is oil trying to get out through there? I'm just wondering why there is oil in the filter itself, since it wasn't black when I bought it.. Oh ya it's around 2 months old, maybe it's just old?


Can a simple rinse be enough to put it back on or do I have to replace it with the stock hose to the air box above my carb?

You've had it connected to the PCV, which has a little bit of oil forced through it. Perfectly normal.
As long as it's not constricting ventilation, no need to replace it.

You typically do get more blow-by when you don't have any vacuum there. It's best to leave the PCV system as is. If you're getting too much oil in your intake, then put in a catch can as a bandaid fix.

Alright part two, I get white smoke from the breather filter alot (I guess it's an escape route), any idea why?

It when your motor gets older oil gets past the rings. Its called blow by. When it get pretty bad its time to take that pipe out of the intake track and make some kinda catch can for it.

Have you checked your PCV valve? It might be plugged up.

That smoke is from the combustion gases blowing around the pistons rings. All motors do this to some degree but it gets worse with age. The PCV system recycles this gas back into the cylinders through the intake manifold to keep formation of sludge in the crank case to a minimum. The breather you installed lets some of this gas out into the atmoshpere instead of being recycled through the intake. So if your motor is older that breather will get a little oily over time. If your PCV valve is plugged up it will get a lot oily.

So any idea why the smoke is coming out of the filter also?

If it is light white smoke you might have a head gasket problem or some kinda moisture problem in the top end of the motor.

Any pictures of where the pcv valve is? Or just a general location? I've been told it's either my head gasket or pcv valve making smoke come out from my exhaust also..

The valve is what your breather is connected to.
It's the tube leaving the top of the valve cover on the cam side (directly above the Honda Motor Co. emblem).

if your pcv valve is plugged or a hose is missing or something, instead of clean air being pulled in there and circulating through the engine, the crankcase will build up pressure amd it will be forced out the breather tube . seeing some moisture there if it's not circulating is normal,when your oil heats up it boils off the moisture in the oil,which is a normal product of combustion. your pcv system normally pulls that moisture out of the crankcase, thats another reason why it's so important. before pcv systems,cars had road draft systems, the amount of sludge caused by the combustion byproducts and moisture was unreal.

if your pcv system is working right, clean air is pulled in at the valve cover tube,it circulates down through the engine, down to the oil pan,it's picked up at the back of the oil pan. it travels up the hose at the back of the oil pan, goes through the oil vapor seperator at the back of the block, the oil goes back to the pan, the vapor goes out the top and into the tube that is attached to the pcv valve. it goes through the pcv valve and into the engine. this is one emissions system you want to keep, it keeps the sludge out of your engine, it's very important for clean oil. I have seen a number of set ups out there where they have rigged moisture seperators from air compressors to catch the crap before it goes to the valve,not a bad idea. works the same but the junk doesn't go in the engine.
