What's too high on the RPM??

I just saw a thread that lead to a youtube video showing someone driving all the way up to 5k...I like to baby my car but at certain times I like to pick up and go. I usually keep myself from going above 4k because I figure it's unhealthy for the engine and I don't think it's worth fucking it up. Does anyone else do this?? If it's fine to do I wouldn't mind doing it...

lol it's all good, these cars can handle it. though it's a good thing you baby your car, but thrashing it every now and then won't hurt. just dont sit on the rev limiter for hours on end

Yeah honestly it's nice to drive faster time to time...I always have it in mind is it really worth it if the engine blows out =/ I'd prefer to drive like an old woman than have no ride at all

The a20 can take it but redline at 5500 or 6g instead of 6500 which is the stock rev limiter

i dont go more than 5.5, but my engines have a nasty habit of aquiring ticking noises
of course i've only had one with less than 200k on the dash, and that tick is all from my bad (little too much advance)

dunno about your USDM motors but this EDM a20a2 i used to beat on endured 8000rpm lots. but 7k would be fine on a stock motor not that it would make any pwoer there,

Alright I guess if need be I'll hit it hard. Just needed some reassurance that it won't make my engine explode on me or anything. It's also useful to know when I'm on a freeway going uphill...my car has a hard time making it up there so maybe kicking back in 4th at a higher rpm would be more fine even with prolonged revving.

My advice to you for going uphill is just anticipating when you'll start the incline and just punch it up to 75-80 so as you're going up you'll still be able to cruise at 65-70. Because IMO downshifting to 4th and punching it is less economical--uses more gas.

Just stating what may or may not be obvious to you already.

If the engine's in good shape, you should have no fear of reving it high. When driving a manual, I'm always much more concerned with not lugging it at low rpms...

Haha is it worse to lug it than to rev more than you typically would?

Re: What's too high on the RPM??

If your accellerating from lights pulling upto what ever rpm is fine all depends on what you done to the engine and cam you have. Mine revs to 7.5k with power as it's got a aftermarket cam in. And also it's been built for high revs as well with uprated springs etc. etc. But the main thing is to not keep it at high revs for instance your in 3rd gear on motorway trying to get the last 500rpm of power out of it and holding it there for 10-15seconds thats a no don't do it change up and use the torque it's quicker that way anyway!! If you just flicking up the box and just hitting 7k for a couple of seconds on the way up thats fine your unlikely to blow anything up unless the engine is allready damaged or worn!! Just make sure you got plenty of oil in the engine and if it's been babied and serviced properly all it's life it's fine. Obviously regular thrashing and driving continually at high rpms will seriously increase wear and likely hood of failure but flicking up the first 3 gears won't!! hope that helps.

Re: What's too high on the RPM??

As long as the engine is in good condition you should have no fear of hitting the redline on occasion. Just don't keep it there all the time. However you can cruise at 4500RPM all day long. It's kinda fun too.

What you don't want to do is floor it below 2000 RPM. That's where you're most likely to get spark knock which can lead to engine damage. And there isn't much torque down there anyway so really no point to it. No need to be paranoid, just keep it in mind as something to not do.
