battery box is almost done

Ok the battery box that will hold the Odyssey battery is almost done, I gave up on my honda decals on it, and decided to strip it to bare metal with the bead blaster, I then spot welded steel over some of the unused holes, and cleaned it and primed it with zinc chromate primer. It then got painted black. and all the electric stuff got reinstalled.

this bolts to the floor behind the passenger seat, and the battery hold downs go through the floor pan and are reinforced from below[/b]

I didn't like the rust,I wanted to keep it looking original,because it's pretty old,but just too much rust. oh here's the mid eighties aeroquip decal I found for a couple of bucks. it's going on top. I have a lot of vintage aeroquip fitting ends in my braided hose stuff, so I just happened to run across the decal. These are really hard to find. I remember honda road race cars in the eighties running aeroquip hoses put together by this company.
oh and the battery box bolts to the floor behind the passenger seat. Those odyssey batteries are compltly safe for interior mounting.

oh, well the battery goes in there, I have a 150 amp breaker between the battery and anything else, it goes into a fuse block, one fuse is for the amps, the other is split between two fuse blocks, one fuse block is hot all the time, the other goes through a 30 amp relay connected to the ignition circuit, when the ignition is on, the one block is on. the voltmeter is coming right off of the electrical bus, it comes on with ignition also, it's as close to the battery as i can get it. it's for diagnostic checks. the other fuses go to the other circuits i've put in the car, EG the voice module, alarm circuits,power door locks,power antenna,etc. the heavy gauge wire coming out goes to the front to the starter, everything else ties to the starter lug.

I have some of that duplicolr auto paint in a can,the one part type, going to clean and repaint the sheet metal in the floors tomorrow. then I can get that thing bolted down. supposed to be automotive paint you can dump in a spray gun and spray,I think it would be suitable for brushing on floor pans.

Ok the outside of the box is done,it's actually ready to mount to the car, My vintage 86 aeroquip sticker went on VERY carefully!! only one chance to get it right. I have a bunch of the vintage eighties aeroquip fittings from them on my engine with new hose. the huey lewis sticker is a long story and a tribute to someone who really liked cars and huey lewis too. plus its correct for the car year

Looking good Lost. How much do those Odyssey batteries weigh? My Autolite failed suddenly and left me stranded last week. Thankfully it was in my driveway on a Saturday. That's pretty typical for Autolite's stuff I've found. Usually you get a nice tow bill in with the bargain. Anyway, I bought an Optima because it was close and easy. They are more than twice the price of a normal battery and a good 20 lbs. heavier. I was kinda bummed dropping that in the already over-heavy front of my car. Is the Odyssey any lighter?

here is the link, and all the specs on the one i was looking at,they come in all sizes and cranking amps, this one is plenty for the standard car without a ghetto thumper system, they were a watercraft application,but a lot of people run this application on smaller displacment engines. they are a popular hot rod battery. the only thing is if you run it all the way into the ground, you should use a charger they approve to bring it back to 100 percent. you can jumpstart it and use a regular charger, but if the voltage is too high the emergency vent will open and the battery will be ruined. a lot of cheap battery chargers can actually put out 15 or 16 volts. this will damage a standard battery also. another good feature of these batteries is you can run then down to nothing over and over,like a deep cycle and it won' t hurt the battery. as long as you bring it back with the right charger. http://www.odysseybatteries.com/battery/pc625.htm

battery is arounfd 89 on average, and it depends on the charger you get, you only really need one of the listed chargers if you are always running it down like a deep cycle. it will do fine in a standard cars charging system. they have a list of approved chargers from different manufacturers, probably not a bad idea to invest in a decent charger anyway. it's better for any kind of battery you charge,not just theirs.

I haven't made the bracket yet, I'll have to get busy on that, I'm going to leave the fuse block with the large fuses in the box, but move the two smaller fuse blocks to where the tool kit would have been in the hatch, this will simplify the wiring a lot. I'll leave the volt gauge next to the battery and add a push button for instant battery voltage checks.

is it possible to kick yourself in the ass? i made the tie down bracket, by hand, I don't have access to the mill on the weekend, so I laid it all out by hand, center punched everything, drilled it all out, chamferred it, then discovered instead of making it 7-5/8, I made it 8-5/8, no way to fix it.

I had to make the positive lead from the battery from 4 gauge instead of 2, I mainly ran the 2 gauge because of the distance and voltage drop. Hopefully the 3 inch piece of 4 gauge shouldn't have a huge effect. I had to make my own copper terminals and bend them to fit, then take out the lead and crimp it. It's a really tight fit between the battery and breaker. There was simply no way to make 2 gauge bend right to fit. the car is mainly running on the alternator while running anyway, and the alternator lead, underhood fuse box lead, and starter lead all connect under the hood. the heavy cable is mainly for starting, it will be fine for charging the battery.
