I got home from work today & put the car away in the garage, forgetting that I was going to the gym later. Anyway later I reversed the car out & I heard this noise & immediately thought... f*ck, the aerial. The aerial extends some way & it got caught on the garage up & over door & got totally knackered, but I sorta straightened it out pending its replacement.

I've got a couple of spares fortunately so thats a job for some day soon.

Bummer. Unfortunately, having a spare isn't even half the concern. You'll be several hours swapping that bugger out.

i got rid of the dam thing and welded up the hole with steel.

I think if you unscrew the aerial base & press the switch up, the aerial & plastic cord should come out. Feed the new one in & press switch down that should be it. At least any other car I've changed the mast on is like that...

I tried to swap out my (manual) antenna because I was getting horrible reception. It was so F-ing stuck behind the dash that I couldn't move it one bit either way. No way I was going to remove the dash for that. Had to cut it, then rewire a new one inconspicuously down the pillar and back behind the dash. Don't know about the electric ones denhonda is talking about. Good luck!

wow that sucks. it looks really hard to swap out. the cord runs through the a piller and comes out a tiny hole, then seems to go around 50 things and ends up at the radio. Im with Dr_Snooz you'll be working on this one for a couple hours.

yeah haha when i replaced the 82 accords i just ran it inside the car and then tucked it down behind the dash

If it were me I would silicone a chrome or black snap cover over the hole and just run another aerial pop a top tune in the race and call it a day.

Yeah roodoo is right, you might be able to get away with installing an antenna from something newer as well. Maybe like a 92-95 Civic. I've installed one of those before, not in an Accord, but the antenna has a similar mast and hole in the roof.

Maybe I'll live with the inoperative elec aerial for a whilst... looks like a job I'll be putting off for as long as possible. It looks sort of okay, its just I like everything on a car to work & I know it'll annoy me in time!

You're all a bunch of sissies. You'll need to loosen the fuse box. It's too much work to take it out, so just loosen it to give yourself a little more room to maneuver. Take out the coin box so you can see in there a little bit. Drop the cover from under the steering wheel. It'll take awhile to unsnake the wire from the radio. The mast is anchored to the antenna motor and is tucked up way under the dash against the side. There is a little clip that holds it in. Remove the clip with a needle nose pliers. It helps to be a contortionist. Tie two (2) strings to the end of the radio wire and begin removing the assembly. Extend the antenna all the way and it should come right out of the motor. Once you have it out, get your new mast. Tie one string to the new mast wire and the other to the plastic extender coil. Using the string, feed them down the pillar evenly. If you don't they'll jam and you'll be screwed. Once you get the new assembly fed down the pillar, you're set. Getting the plastic coil into the motor is a mother and I don't have any suggestions for making it easier. Getting the retainer clip back in is even harder and it helps to shine a flashlight through the coin box hole so you can see what you're doing. If you do it right, you'll be stylin' like this guy:
