Latest addition to my collection. 1984 Accord LX.

Hello, I'm new to the site. I frequent honda-tech.com and 7thgenhonda.com but just recently picked up this beauty so I thought it fitting I join 3geez.com.

The transmission is slipping pretty bad but other then that it is a clean running car.

Oh, did I mention I only paid $160 for it?

I'm not sure what my long term plans are for it.
Yesterday we started giving it a thorough cleaning. We found a half smoked joint under the seat so the whole interior is getting cleaned with ammonia and the carpets are getting cleaned. I'm going to try the Turtle Wax carpet cleaner.

I found a new transmission locally for $200.
It needs a new axleback exhaust. If anyone has a good suggestion on where to find one, preferably OEM, I'm all ears.

    Welcome to the site!

You'll be kept busy getting that all cleaned up... but under all the grime it looks pretty sound! Its not done massive miles either by US standards... it would be considered high mileage in the UK you see.

    Good luck with it

Wait, you found half a joint so you're gonna take ammonia to it? I might look around a bit more first.

Did the rear seat box come with it? It looks like the car must have been manufactured around that box.

Not a bad buy for $160. Where has it gone to get the engine bay looking like that? Looks like it was under a river...

    Awesome find for the money!

My engine bay looked like that, everything had heavy dust/dirt on it.
Former owner did a ton of hiking off of unpaved roads, cleaned up fairly easy!

    Thanks for the kind words.

The guy who had it before took it into the oil fields quite a bit (hence the dirt) and it appears sometime in its former life it spent alot of time at the beach because there was alot of sand in it.

The interior is all cleaned up and put back in. Today i'm on the hunt for a new tranny. Once i finish putting the motor back in the civic, the accord gets its bay cleaned and a tranny swap.

i'm not complaining for what i have in it

Please do me a favor and before you go getting another transaxle go to the Honda dealer and get some ATF-Z1 Part # 08200-9001. Flush the hell out of that transmission and I would bet it will be fine. Those transaxles were bullet proof and very durable. Yours doesn't seem to have that many miles on it either. My 85 SE-i has the original transaxle with 285,000 miles on it. I would suspect yours either has the wrong ATF in it or judging from the engine bay it may have just been severely neglected. Trust me, as a Certified Honda trained technician I have seen this many times. The ATF should be changed every 30k miles under "normal" conditions and "severe service" is 15k change interval. The recommended procedure is to jack up the front of the vehicle, make sure the engine is warmed up then drain the ATF, fill it back up and run it through all forward gears and reverse. Do this several times alternating from reverse to forward direction. Drain the fluid again, fill it up and keep repeating until the fluid comes clean. When my brother got his 96 Accord with about 155,000 miles on it the ATF was black so I flushed it twice at the first oil change, once again at the next oil change, and again once more at the third oil change. Now I do it every second to third oil change or sooner if it starts to look dark. It shifts perfectly now and is totally trouble free. I did the same thing on my mom's 97 Acura 3.5RL. When I first drained the ATF it looked like dark coffee and that was at about 90k miles. It now has 198,000 miles on it and the transmission still shifts perfectly and is 100% trouble free. I change the ATF every other oil change on that car because it sees lots of stop and go driving, also it is usually starting to get dark by the second oil change. I hope that helps and welcome to the forum!!!
