5 speed swap done, but no go!

So I just got done with my 5 speed swap. I test drove it around the corner once and noticed the axle wasn't in all they way since it was leaking oil a little bit. I took the axle nut off and used a hammer to tap it all the way in. So I go to test drive it again and I stop at the stop sign. I then put it into gear and all of a sudden no go! I didn't hear any strange noises at all. I didn't do anything out of the ordinary!

*If I don't push the clutch in, and I put it into gear nothing happens-the speedo will work though!

*If I put it in gear the speedometer will work corresponding to which gear I'm in.

*The clutch cable is like normal

*If I put it into gear I can still push the car though - If its in gear the car shouldn't roll right?

    Bad clutch cable?
    Is the clutch shattered?
    Bad axle?
    Bad transmission?

    I'm so pissed!

I put in a new clutch, pressure plate, brand new flywheel, new drivers side axle.

Throw out bearing spring is what got me. Did you use a new spring?

I've never had to use a hammer to seat any of these axles' is it the correct axle?

The car will when in gear ever so slightly.

Correct axle. I didn't replace the spring that goes to the throw out bearing.

What symptons did you have from a bad spring?

I jacked the car up and the axle popped out. Im going to try taking it out and putting it back in. I think that the little clip is bad that holds it inside the tranny. Gosh I hope thats the only problem!! I'm going to start praying!

Our cars don't have lsd so if one axle pops out, the car won't move right?

^^ yup very true. but the whole thing would have to pop out. I had one slide out and drain all the tranny fluid out on me. i still was able to get home.

I had this same problem when I had to pull my tranny.
Pull the axle back out and get a small file and file out the groove that the clip goes in until the clip does not bind at all. What happens is that some of the splines get pinched down in the groove and then don't allow the clip to expand fully once you put the axle in.
It is frustrating. I went through 3-4 qts of MTF before I got it right.

Ok, so fired the car back up and put into gear, turned the steering wheel back and forth, looked at the axle and it keeps slightly coming out.

Correct . i learned that my first time driving a 5speed
floored it and dumped the clutch in reverse axle nut shot off and the axle came out just a enough for it not to move.. i let the car sit for 6 months behind the house thinking the trans was broken

Yeah file out the groove so that the clip spins all the way around without binding. Just basically clean out the groove.

It doesn't seem like the axle goes in all the way. It looks like it should go in about 1/8" more.

Even though its new you've had it in and out more than once. Once is enough to push some of the splines into the groove ever so slightly.
I had to tap the inner joint with a rubber mallet to get mine to seat fully. Once you have it in like you think it should be give it a gentle tug with your hand. if its in all the way and seated it won't pull out.

Re: 5 speed swap done, but no go!

Well I went to Napa autoparts and purchased a brand new axle. I got it home and put it up to the one bullard sent me. Turns out the napa one was a full 2 inches longer. I put it in and am buttoning everything up. I'll let you guys know in a few minutes how it comes out. The new one seems to fit better.

Re: 5 speed swap done, but no go!

That's why I went to Napa. I wanted the best money could buy besides from the dealer.

Anyways, I took for a stroll around the block and it seemed to do fine. I got it home and the axle still feels loose where it meets the tranny. It will wiggle up, down, in & out, side to side. I think my tranny is taking a poo on the inside there.

So if the drivers side axle is loose, does that mean the passengers side axle will take over?

As long as the axle stays in the splines it will work. Once it pops out of the splines, the wonderful open diff takes over and you're stuck on a stand still. You could try replacing the clip. They take a couple of seconds to replace.

How does the transmission know if there is an axle in there?
