I admire your diligence Mark, on the project. Keep up on the goal oriented mindset. It helps to write them down and redo the list every other day when you realize more of the details along the way.
Something else that helps too is try not to add too many extras not related to functionality ,reliability and safety. Some os those really slow your progress down, but I do admit they tend to be things that keep the project fun.

    Re: Mark's Official Build Thread

lmao at the puns guys. Ive got a 16 month old and 5 year old and I think shes says all those once a week. She has a workbench next to mine and as long as I keep it occupied with stuff to sort or pond on shes set. if I fall behind the mouth opens and its all down hill from there. She loves walking around the garage picking up screws and small things that fall off my overloaded workspaces.

Keep at it mark Im sure youll see the light one day. I saw mine at 330 ion the morning after rebiulding the trans with a flashlight in my driveway. I still didnt make the meet. Havent touched it since either. Go figure.

    Re: Mark's Official Build Thread

yeah I'm the "work hard not smart" guy on this project.

Ok, so here's the deal (yeah, still no pics):

Engine and tranny are in. I'm waiting on an emergency order of a piece of my carb linkage, which should get here either today or tomorrow. Then the linkage goes on, and the carbs get mounted up to the head.

The front knuckles have been dropped off just this morning to get new wheel bearings and ball joints pressed into them. I found the adjustable rear upper control arms that I've been tearing the garage apart trying to look for. When I jacked the ass end of the car up, low and behold, there they were. Already nice and comfy in place of the stock arms. When the hell did I put those on?

The stock fuel pump has been gutted from the fuel neck and a longer piece of tube added so it gets to the bottom of the tank. Then I literally wasted about 4 hours trying to figure out where and how to mount up the new fuel pump and filters. Both are huge, and both are external. I ended up having to fabricate a bracket for the fuel pump because there was no way it was going on with just the stock mounting plate.

Just last night I picked up a 5 foot length of steel 3/8 tubing, a double-flaring tool, and about 12 ft of 3/8 hose so I can plumb everything in all nicey-nice.

Last night it was fuggin pouring out so I had to resort to a shop light hanging from the "oh-shit" handle and a hand-held flashlight to finish getting the dash all together. Dash is back in, wiring is all finished up inside the car (except for the ignition switch), and the steering column has been re-attached.

    So, the shortened to-do list:

Finish plumbing for the fuel delivery
Figure out what the hell to do with the exhaust
Install and (slightly) tune carbs (although I have no idea what I'm doing there)
    Install new battery
    Re-install fuse box
Put the engine harness back on
    Install Alternator

Hope to God my rad is still good

fill up on all fluids, do a little praying, and turn the key (or maybe push the button) to try and start it.

I've never done an engine tear-down or rebuild before, and had no one who's done this before to look over my shoulder and either slap me in the head for doing something wrong, or help me through some of it, so you're guess is as good as mine as to whether or not it'll actually work.

Oh, then finally wash 'da bitch. She's dirrrrrrrrty.

great list now put them in hiearchial order, for example installing the alternator would come before the battery, sparky.. lol
sounds like you do not have much more to do really, cool

Except the fuel line plumbing could take hours and hours to get right. Bending up the hard lines and flaring the ends is a real bitch to do and do right. I've been holding off on the alternator because I would rather have as much room as possible when installing the carbs, then doing the other add-on's later, but we'll just see.

Oh, forgot about the dizzy too. That's gotta go back on too.

Last.... ...anyone have any recommendations on plugging up the EGR and other (don't remember what it's for) fittings on the stock carb manny?

Before you fire her up, prime the oil system!!!!

Looking at the list, you're almost there man! you have 3 more days and nights go get this done. Tuning the carbs...well you can do that on the way down here.

As far as plugging the manifold, get a bolt that would fit. Or, get the stock pipe for it, crimp one end and seal it up.

you can mount the alternator, wire it up and so forth then take out the slack adjuster bolt and allow the alt to swing back toward the firewall safe and snug out of the way. Then once you are done in the intake manifold area you can swing it back around, install the belt and slack bolt. The alt can stay on the main pivot bolt the entire time, just leave it a wee loose so it can swing.

    Re: Mark's Official Build Thread

alright, well here's the shitty pics...

I got all the plumbing done last night. Hours spent under the back bumper of the car, and a lot of tinkering with the bender and double-flare tool. I'm pretty happy with the way it came out, but I'm sure I'll end up redoing it at some point because there are a few bends I'm not entirely happy with, but this will do for now. I tried to do the whole run (from the back bumper to the tank) with one length of pipe, but there was no way in hell it would work. I ended up with two pieces. The pics show the simpler piece. It really got interesting, with compound bends, with the piece that goes around the wheel well.

Engine is in (but I still need to finish up the wiring harness and plug all the fittings on the water pipe).... (yeah and sorry, the tranny is damn dirty, I just don't have the time to blast the casing and get it sparkly clean at the moment. ...in time in time)

Interior is still dirty as hell, and the floor mats need to come out. I need to replace a few pieces, and get the center console on, but all-in-all, she's almost done inside.

As she sits right now. This pic was taken as I left for work this morning. Don't mind the house that desperately needs a power washing and paint. This ought to piss off the wife and neighbors because the ass end is 3 feet in the air.

dunno. ...but I'm pretty sure the stock carb would drown in fuel with the new fuel pump I got there. That beast puts out about 100 gph at 3-4 psi.

well yeah, I did use it, but only once. That was easily 9+ years ago though. No trouble at all with anything. Not that I noticed any difference, or that I even knew what the hell I was doing then.

I'm just too lazy to peel off the sticker now. One day I'll get to it.

What sucks is this is coming *back* together. I was a VERY nice, very clean, rust, dent, scratch, smell (damn mice) free hatch and she even got a fresh new coat of Pure White GM paint back in '01. Now she's beaten down by years of neglect.

    The rear suspension:

You can hardly make it out now through all the rust, corrosion and spiderwebs, but those knuckles, control arms and Brembo rotors used to be painted nicely. Every single bushing, nut, bolt, washer, seal, etc was replaced with new when I did the rear disc swap. The BFG SS lines were nice and bright red. Now this is what it's deteriorated to. It'll get back to it's glory days.
