Book says to lower the axle, but you can fish it out. I have one for sale in the marketplace if you wanna get one cheap.

what I do is unhook the speedo cable from the transmission, and scoot a couple vac lines out of the way. Then I just unhook the alt and fish it out under the carb and out the passenger side of the bay.

I didn't have any luck getting it out with all the emmisions crap still on. I had to take the axle out to get it out. Took me 47 minutes in and out. As soon as I got the emmisions crap all out, I swapped alts in 20 minutes hooked up.

I haven't had to replace the one on my car yet, but I did it on a bone stock lx sedan no problem.

I imagine it would be significantly easier to do on my hatch without all the emissions crap.

Did you remove the rear motor mount to get it out?! I would gouge my arms if I tried to fit between the vacuums and firewall.

    Re: Alternator

nope. didn't mess with the motor mounts at all. The only thing I had to physically remove was the speedo cable from the transmission. Everything else I just worked around.
