I have a 88 with 280k on it and ive been running royal purple 10w40 havent had a problem with it yet other than tha fact its almost 10$ a quart. Slight leak but thats always been there and i use restore an seafoam every oil change.

Best to get a non synthetic, or mineral oil, in case of having high high miles on the clock. Viscosity wise I'd guess 15W-40.
You have put a good engine flush in the oil, then drive about for 20 mins, to get the oil to heat up propperly, then you can empty the sump when cooled a bit. once all the sludge and all oil has drainned out, Then you can pour in the new oil.
