Carb problems, smoke, valve ticking...?

So I just picked up an 80 Accord the other day, main problem I want to get sorted out is large amount of black smoke that comes out of the exhaust in low gears (1&2nd...sometimes 3rd). I tried to adjust the float level according to this website but couldnt distinguish between the LARGE screw and smaller screw.

Didn't know which was the 'adjusting' and 'primary'...could someone help me out on the differences, which get turned clock/counter clockwise.

At one point the carb was filled with gas and a ticking sound from the fuel pump, the way i turned it there was no gas and no ticking. Not too familar with carbs at all, do i want to see gas in the carb? Someone point me in the right direction to an intro to this engine/carb/carbs in general lol.

Also, thinking of replacing my carb anyways, read good things about the weber 32/36 (they are running ~350 on ebay).

But I do have a lot of old, rotted looking hoses which i plan to replace tomorrow, are there a few sizes that I could just grab a few sets of hose/feet at Autozone and be fine with so I dont have to make various trips.

I've rebuilt two of those f-ing carbs. The best way to adjust those floats is to take the carb off the car, smash it flat with a hammer and throw it away. The smoke was probably not a float adjustment and now that you've adjusted the floats, you're screwed. If you adjust the floats on those, you're screwed. If you adjust the idle mixture, you're screwed. If you open the hood above one of those, you're screwed. If you don't do any of the above, well, you're still screwed. Those carbs are notorious for stabbing you in the eye and leaving you with a broken heap of Honda in your driveway until you go buy another carb from the scrap yard.

So now that I'm done ranting, here's the deal. The smoke is probably your floats sinking. You'll be rebuilding the carb to get to those, so plan on a rebuild. The trick is that the '82s used essentially the same carb with one important difference. There were site glasses built into the sides with little marks that tell you exactly where the gas should be when the floats are properly adjusted. I never tried it, but I would go to the wrecking yard looking for an '82 carb. Then I would pray with great fervor that it fits the '80 and doesn't need extensive modification. If it does, rebuild it, install it (after smashing the '80 carb) and then pray very hard as you fire it up that first time.

Thats what I was dreading, I have been researching all over the site trying to find a clear solution.

So has it been proven that an 82' will work, or would I be better off going for the Weber conversion 32/36 carb? I heard on a few sites that your gas milage could be increased a lot!?

82 carbs should work, u can even use 84-85 carbs too if u swap the jets. I dont now about the weber mileage. but my 82 runs rich & this morning when I filled up 14.5 gals. I got 370 miles with the stocker. pretty good if ya ask me.

What do you feel about a remanufactured carb? Theres a few on ebay for both models, what is the difference between a gen 1 & gen 2 carb (82/83)?

What you say? Any gasket kit brand you would reccomend? My current carb was said to have it 'remounted'? Not sure what that would mean...

And yes, I did have gas coming up thru the adjusting bolt when i tried to adjust it.

Well I sprung for the Weber 32/36 kit from import experts for $305 shipped (same company is selling for $340 on ebay) Hopefully this can all be straightened out in a week or so...

I figure since all i can find is manufactured, and its kinda hard to choose between all of them and know how good they are redone Ill just go for new with a company (redline/weber) who is still around and can supply parts and services....thanks for your help Snooz

yeah...i wish they would of made the keihn carb adjustable...but the weber is a good pick...hope you port out your manifold and have it running smooth

well some of us like to do alternate carbs, but i wouldn't recommend it unless you have access to a weld shop,a machine shop,and lots of aluminum

yup. and properly adjusted. if all else fail. you can try a full factory spec rebuild.
