    need some pictures: a20 mounts

ok heres the deal. im swapping an a20 into my 83 civic and i want to know how the mounts are set up on the accord. has anyone got an engine outside of the car that they could take some pictures of? my junkyard engine only came with the timing side engine mount, and just the part that would be bolted to the block. im wondering if i can retain all my stock civic mounts and just get the accord bracketry to bolt to the engine.

i realise that the a20 tilts forward 15 degrees, and i think that the driver side engine mount is made to accomodate using my stock civic setup (bolt through the top, not the side) with just a rotation ofthe mount that i have on the car. looks to me like it might work but im not sure. the bolt through the side setup looks like its offset to do this as well but i have not ever seen the engine in a car.

anyway, can anyone help? possibly sell me the engine brackets if i think they might work?

    thanx!

For the mount that goes inside the timing belt, I would bet money that you can unbolt the bracket from the Civic motor and bolt it onto the A20. My EK1 (very closely related to your Civic motor) has nearly the same holes on the block as the A20, and I'm sure would make the A20 go in easily enough. As for the front and rear mounts, have you tried bolting your Civic brackets onto the A20 block? They may work, or at least be close enough to drop that thing into your car. I'll root for some pics here and see what I can come up with...

Yeah there were a couple pictures of it posted a while ago. I think it was Lost who said there used to be a swap kit made for second- or third-generation Civics.

Re: need some pictures: a20 mounts

the first gen civics have a smaller engine bay width wise and length wise as well. i wont have the clearance issues he had, and probably wont have to make mounts similar to his either.

on the matter of using my timing belt side civic mount, i did not retain it when i took the motor in for a core so i dont have it anymore i was hoping to retain the a20's forward tilt, which the civic mount wont do. i guess i dont have to and i can obtain a new timing side mount.

i have not attempted to bolt up my civic mounts. the rear side (i believe) is also bolted to the transmission, and i dont have a trans to see if it will work. i know for sure that the civic bolt pattern is different, just not for sure how much.

it seems as i may be able to move the current alternator bracket to the front of the engine, or at the very least make a new bracket for it to go on, and run a gm 1 wire alt or something like that. i have a brand new alternator off of my civic i could use, so thats an option as well, but i would have to find either an alt pulley or change my a20's crank pulley to v belt.

Re: need some pictures: a20 mounts

If you need a V-belt pulley, the 84-85 Accord's crank pulley will bolt onto the A20 crankshaft. It's 3 V-belts stock I'm pretty sure.... Hmm, now I gotta double check...

Are you sure your Civic's engine didn't have a forward tilt already? I'm pretty sure the EK1 and most of the early Honda motors had that same forward tilt.

The rear mount is always the biggest pain. They're so similar on all the engines, but so different. I would use the one on the A20 and modify it to work on your subframe.

How much clearance are you going to have for the front exhaust? The Civic 1200s had a crossflow head, but any other Civic, I'm pretty sure (maybe there's a 1300 of some sort) was a counterflow head, with the exhaust coming out the back, and the block sitting really close to the front crossmember.

Re: need some pictures: a20 mounts

unfortunately theres a front to rear crossmember that goes right where the exhaust would go for the a20 so I will have to modify it so I can route an exhaust through there. probably a few pieces of pipe around the oil pan instead of through the gap. I believe that my engine psobably did tilt forward but I don't think it was all that steep of an angle. at least I saved the old mounts. looks like I can get some of those poly mounts for dodge trucks to replace the cube shaped ones out of the civic. does anyone have a v belt pulley they wouldn't mind getting rid of?

you can bolt the alternator where the AC is for the a20, thats what i'm doing for fuel bowl clearances on the SU's , you need the civic alternator pulley with three grooves, then you can use the ac belt to drive the alternator. I just got one of those Mr gasket universal alternator arms, chopped most of it off, then used that for the tension bolt on the alternator. I'm still working on the idler pulley to make my water pump work but i think a 96-98 civic idler will work.
