    Talking Suggestions??

    Hi all savvy 3Gee'rz!

I know MPG has been beaten to death but i really need to know if i have a problem or if my MPG is what is expected. Im currently getting 20MPG and I've changed fuel filters, plugs, wires, cap, rotor, air filter was cleaned (K&N), tires are inflated to spec, once in a while i used a carb cleaner in the gas tank. I currently drive about 100 miles to work (50 each way) with some stop and go traffic (605/405 in SOCAL). Is there anything else i can do to save a bit more cash on gas? Thanks in advance!

Throw away your K&N filter. My MPG took a big turd when I put one of those on.

    Re: Suggestions??

There isn't much help for the stock carb, but if you can get the mixture tab out the back of the base carb. & lean it out, that might help. Sounds like another carb running too rich from age. Rebuilding the carb will only lead to hair loss. Anyone that needs better gas mileage needs to convert to Weber & open up the exhaust.

BTW- There will be no codes to look for on your car.

O2 sensor and possibly engine temp sensor for the ecu, which is on the back of the block to the passengerside of the oil filter housing.
These were my next steps in trying to sort my poor mileage. I gave up and bought a Weber.
Unfortunately it looks like your location won't allow that.

Good point greentee. I didn't notice his location. 02 sensor and having the catalytic converter check for restriction is another option. Personally, I don't see much that the ecu does for the carb., maybe for doing something with that black box which jacks with vacuum to the carb. The ecu on these carbed cars really isn't a ECU, it's an emission brain.

Sounds like the Idle air control control valve which is the called by a different name by Honda. IECV or something like like. Might need to search around, cause it's on here on several threads.

Thank you everyone for all your responses, I will check out the O2 sensor/s as soon as i figure out where they are (any help with that?). I wish I could change the carb but like you might already know thats not an option for me. I didnt think about the cat so I might look into that aswell.

    Re: Suggestions??

The o2 sensors are screwed on to your headers. They are difficult to remove and didnt work for me when i changed them. I still have bad mileage and have done everything you have + more. Who knows though might help you out a bit. There are 2 sensors and you can see them when you open the hood on the headers. They should run you about $20-$30 each

That was my thought also that the ecu would see a temp sensor reading cold and through the black box might? make the mixture richer.

I was never able to remove my O2 sensor as well. There should only be one sensor on the carbed cars.

Hey all, Im going to change the oil this weekend and double check everything. Would a new cap and rotor do anything if i changed it less than 6 months ago and I drove about 2-3K miles? Ill probably check on the plugs too. Ill post any outcome. Oh btw my DX is has an auto tranny any difference in MPG? I really would rather not mess with the carb or O2 sensor i figure that if i passed smog the sensor should be ok. Idle is ok no hesitation or anything so im just gonne dummy check everything else again.

I wouldn't be surprised if you have a vacuum leak somewhere.

What brand plugs and what is the gap set at?

You really want to be running NGK plain copper plugs gapped correctly. If /when you pull them take a picture and post up what the electrode looks like.

Also what and where is your timing set at?

    Re: Suggestions??

I swapped out the air filters and im now getting 24 MPG, the plugs dont need gapping i have Boch +2's. So over all its definately an increase. Average speed is from 65-75 with some stop and go traffic. SO-CAL 605/405 freeway. Im not sure what my timing is set at, what should it be set at or how can i check?
