    timing at idle question

sooo, somebody out there possibly want to take a timing light out to their beloved 3rd gen and get me a couple of readings?
i need a reading at idle, 1000 and 1500 rpms.
    preferably a bone stock car.

or anybody with a obd1 swap want to post their timing map on a screen shot? I'll post mine if you post your's..lol

The reason for this thread is that i am trying to figure out a issue with atomized fuel coming out of the exhaust at idle.

Doesn't the flywheel only have a few marks on it? How do you read how many degrees of advance you have when it goes past those marks? Is there a special timing gun for that?

Yup, I got one of those. It's got a dial on it so you can adjust the light between 0-60° advanced I think.

shoot i forgot all about it. You would need a timing gun with the dial on the back.
you would turn the dial till the tdc mark is on the pointer.

thanks for the reply's guys keep 'em coming.

what i am trying to figure out is why my car wont idle unless it's pig rich. I can adjust the fuel trim and lean out the idle section by 1% but it will gradually lean out and die.

Timing at idle should be rock steady, I dont really see how it could make it run rich/lean unless it is way way out of spec. This is just what I think with out knowing your set up.

Whats your wideband eading at idle?

Are your injectors double firing maybe at idle.

    Re: timing at idle question

i have the injectors set to fire once per two rev's, so i dont think thats the problem.
    here is the spark map.
    lower left will be idle.

Not sure ...shows your 15 degrees BTDC up to 1500 rpm that sounds about right. Change it to 10 if you think it will make a differance.

Stock size injectors? Fuel pressure low (lower) at idle. Maybe to injectors are not firing correctly and real low settings.

    Re: timing at idle question

I wonder if you could call RC and see if they will run down low enough. With a 2 liter motor they may not be accurate firing wise at low pulse levels. Dunno what else to tell you really.

    EDIT:

Seems possible just need the right way to control them.

    Re: timing at idle question

    hmmm. food for thought .
thanks for the help. I was wondering if i needed to bump the fuel pressure up because of a suspected weak spray pattern. Who knows if it will help.

I will do some research, and i have a line on an auto tune feature for the Holley commander.
the coolant temp modifier may be off as well.
