My 1988 DX conversion to FI

This is my 1988 DX. I bought it off an old lady. The water pump went out and she warped the head.

I rebuilt the engine and the head redone and drove the hell out of it for about a month until the carb started giving me issues.

I rebuilt the carb but could never get it to run right. So it's been sitting for about 4 months now. Last Monday, I lucked into a 1988 LXI with a knock, so now I am in the middle of an FI swap. Here's some pics of the LXI, sorry but I didn't think to take pics until I began tearing it down. This is day 1 of the tear down. I am taking my time and salvaging every part on the car.

Here's the engine I'll save it for last.

Day 2 Interior and dash removal

I'll keep updating this post and when I'm finished I plan to write a more detailed how to than we currently have on the site.

Was there anything wrong with the LX-I? cause I personally would have put the DX block into the LX-i, the used the DX for parts. Either way you've got spare parts. I'm also taking my time stripping my junker to save parts.

    Thanks for the welcome!

The DX has ~220K, but you wouldn't think so looking at it.. Granted, the paint is faded, but the interior is what gets me with that car.. Almost perfect. As Lew said, we reman'd the engine about 4 months ago before a piece of metal found its way down the intake.. Ooops...

We live in western Arkansas. I've owned a few Hondas in the past, but never an Accord.

The carbs do suck, but finding replacement emission parts suck even more

I had the intention to tune the carb for him and delete the emissions, but he found the LX-I for dirt cheap instead... Most of the emission junk is still intact on the PGI, so we're going to try and keep it all in case he decides to move somewhere that smogs..

Re: My 1988 DX conversion to FI

that's a pain in the ass conversion for sure, but you do get the benefit of efi. why not do the OBD1 conversion while you're tearing everything apart that way you can better manage the fuel maps/emissions controls.

...you know the alternative to the shitty stock carb is a 32/36 DGEV Weber (of one of the many variants of). Many have done it here with great success, and it's pure mechanical fuel delivery.

Re: My 1988 DX conversion to FI

Thanks for the tips.. I'll do a bit of searching and see whats involved.

I told Lew to look for a replacement carb(like the Webber), but I think he just really wants to get away from it..lol

roodoo2 (he already posted on this thread) has done a Weber DGEV. if you search for threads he's started, you can see the crazyness he's done with a mere replacement carb.

Re: My 1988 DX conversion to FI

Sorry it's taken me so long to post guys, but I have really had my hands full. Here are more pics on the project, I am actually further along now and hope to have more pics taken in the morning.

Day 3 we see more of the LXI teardown. I needed the vacuum diagram picture from the hood so twin snapped a quick pick. And this is what he got.

So, it's safe to say that the LXI has had some body damage in the past. I began day three with the removal of the blower box, heater core, and condenser.

    And removing the chassis wiring.

With the chassis harness removed from the LXI

I began tearing down the DX

Re: My 1988 DX conversion to FI

Day 4 and 5 consisted of just tearing down the inside of the DX

On Day 6 the DX's Wiring harness was removed

I then moved on to the engine bay of the LXI to get the engine and tranny ready for removal.

As I removed from the LXI, I installed on the DX

Re: My 1988 DX conversion to FI

By the end of Day 6 twin and I maneuvered the LXI out of a mud hole so I could drop the tank and pull the engine and tranny

I'll take more pics tomorrow before I progress any further.
