found a vintage accessory for nada

just got a vintage accessory for nothing, it's an authentic 1987 radio shack brick cell phone. I was dumpster diving and found it. It's just too cool to not install in the car, it has the mobile cradle too, i just need a screw on antenna for it. I'm not sure where to mount it yet, but it's exactly what the wealthy 3g owner would have had when the car was new. it's built like a military radio. all aluminum construction with those raised grip surfaces. I was hoping to be able to dismantle the battery,so i could make it light up, but it's sealed. on second thought i might now want to power it up, these things were produced before the 5 watt maximum output and some of them produce up to 10 watts of microwave energy.

Too bad all the analog networks are shut down. There may be one left, but I'm pretty sure there's no service provider that will let you ever use that phone again.

if you were to find a provider, you could move to miami, hide cocain in it, wear aviators, and no one would suspect a thing

there are no words to truly describe how pointless I feel this project is.
why would you care to clutter your car up with such garbage?

i have lots of old useless shit I can send your way (isa sound cards go nice with an accord interior) if you would like.

thats fine you scored an old cell phone, but jesus, does it REALLY need to go in your car?

*and no, i did not wake up on the wrong side of the bed today. i just honestly cannot fathom why this might be even slightly a good idea.

that said, it would be cool to have an accord of the month with such a unique antique in it. once I see pictures of this installed, I will definitely nominate your car.

hell yeah! put the phone in there, a flex capacitor, and some blow on the dash!
It could be a tribute car to the 80s!

Re: found a vintage accessory for nada

I spent all last year removing the old analog gear from cellular sites in the northwest region. Believe it or not they are rebiulding them and selling them to 3rd world contries for some pretty good coin. The 1st one we did we had to pay to replace. It was biult in a storage biulding. the biulding was rebiult and it wouldnt go out in a single piece. We dio the next best thing. Opened the wall where the coaxil cable were penetrating and pushed itoff the 3rd floor of a 6 floor biulding. We had to call the city police to secure the sidewalk below. These things way nearly a ton in all 3 pieces. Its amazing.

To see an old phone like that reminds me of "that 80's show." I think it was a 3 series pilot that bonged. Its was gret, everyone looked like the miami vice guys. I bet thats why so many tumors are around these days. Anyways I vote sell it and find a motorola star tac. the original flip phone. Graned not from the 80's but??? Maybe make it a super cool MP3 player inside or something.

I just think it goes with the car, these are pretty rare, if people are buying them for 2-300 bucks, knowing they will never work again, they must still be pretty cool. I remember when these came out. it was a big deal then to have one, even though the battery would last about ten minutes, and you were probably deep frying your brain. I had the Nokia installed phone in my car for years, and it was activated, everyone always told me they had forgotten about those phones and they couldn't believe it still worked.

they did that here, when they took the analog antennas down, they just knocked the towers right over and BAM! they replaced them with taller towers anyway. This just goes with the car i mean if you wanted a phone when these cars were made, this is your choice pretty much.

cant add much more than that.

Lost....sell that piece to fund your many unneccessary aluminum machining projects.

or clean it up and put it on a bookshelf somewhere.

I agree with guaynabo.... sell it!!! You can't use it, it will take up space in your car... $200 will go a long way towards rebuilding those carbs so you can actually drive your car!!

Re: found a vintage accessory for nada

well this sucks, because it's a tandy it's not worth much, doesn't matter that mobia made it, or that it's a genuine 87 brick. the other brands are selling like crazy but none of the dealers are interested in the tandy. I guess i could put it in the car for a while, maby it will go up in value. it slides out of it's mount,so all i need to put in there is the mount itself. I'll see if i can sell the two bag phones on egay, for some reason people are buying them.
