Just a small project on the Civic, I had to replace the plastic trim around the vents,including the vents. That in itself is a nightmare, while it was off I went ahead and added this little panel, there was originally a change pocket here, it always looked weird, because there was an edge that originally matched up to the factory radio. I still don't have vents that function properly, but at least they aren't missing. I'm not sure if any of these vents aren't broken. It took us two years before we finally found one of these cars in the yard here. I added this power outlet, so I can plug in the MP3 dock at a useful height. I wonder who was the idiot who put the original lighter plug up under the dash in front of the shifter. It's useless.

thats a practical mod, you can't plug anything into the lower lighter plug. it's way up in front of the console. this puts the dock right at eye level and makes it really easy to operate. for 14 bucks it's not a bad dock, it's a modulator, and it was pretty decent sounding, seems to be well made also. you just push the up down buttons on it to change frequencies, it charges the Ipod also.

it unplugs, i don't leave the mp3 player in the car, you just unplug the dock and toss it in the glove box. where did you get that cable though? i'm looking for one for the 3g that just plugs in and charges the player while giving me line outs

its an alpine cable, sold seperate, goes to the back of my alpine deck, deck and wire about $90

lost you seem crazy enough, why not make your own cable, if you know the pinouts on the ipod. just buy another one of those docking things and use the small cable from it and extend it, since it has the audio and the power too it.

I found a desktop dock station with line out on ebay,it runs on 12 volts, i might put something like that in the glovebox, it had a remote control too. I have a wired fm modulator for the XM radio and the ipod so all i need to do is power it and have line out from it . I can't afford to do anything right now though . My main concern is holding on to the house and keeping the lights on.

yea that one is 18 bucks, it's hard to find one for a second gen though, I was looking at a specific type of dock and that one fits the bill nicely. I'm happy with the 4 gig, I have a program,NOT I tunes, that lets me load sets of MP3's on disc, then with a few clicks I can change my entire playlist really easy.

I hate I tunes, too complicated, all i want to do is be able to load music, and not have all the extra crap.

the dock plugs into the lighter, the lighter plug on the civic is way down just above the console, right in front of the shifter. this is why I had to move it, that plug is about useless where it is.

I may consider buying another one of these and pulling the audio out of it. I really would like to find a plug in dock like this without the fm modulator for the three g. I have that nice mounting pad that used to have the built in phone handset on it. If it was mounted there I could operate the mp3 player with one finger. it's just a matter of getting rid of the lighter plug on one and mounting the dock to the mounting pad.

Looks to be that when this pin is grounded it closes a switch so that on loss of power the Ipod shuts off. Dock has the same resistor.

Pins 25 and 27 may be used in different manner. To force the iPod 5G to charge in any case, when USB Power 5 VDC (pin 23) is fed, 25 must be connected to 5V through a 10kOhm resistor, and 27 must be connected to the Ground (for example: pin 1) with a 10kOhm resistor.

iPod 5G can also be forced to charge by attaching the data + and the data - pins to the 5v via a 10k Ohm resistor ( BOTH PINS) and connecting pin 16 to the 5v (ground). (Confirmed working with iPod 5G 20GB)

To charge an iPhone 3G / iPod Touch 2nd gen, usb data- (25) should be at 2.8v, usb data+(27) should be at 2.0v. This can be done with a few simple resistors: 33k to +5v (23) and 22k to gnd(16) to obtain 2v and 33k to +5v and 47k to gnd to obtain 2.8v. This is a notification to the iphone that it is connected to the external charger and may drain amps from the usb.

If you disassemble the original apple-ipod-dock-connector-cable and look at the connector itself, on the back side, where it is soldered, you can see the number 1 and 30 (e.g. pin 1 and 30). In this description NUMBERING is INVERSED: pin 1 is pin 30 and pin 29 is pin 2, so, don't look at numbers on connector.

The remote control, iTalk and other serial devices use Apple Accessory Protocol for communication with iPOD. This protocol was introduced with the 3rd generation iPods, and is also compatible with the 4th generation iPods and mini iPods. The connections uses a standard 8N1 (one startbit 8 data bits 1 Stopbit) serial protocol, 19200 baud (higher rates up to 57600 also possible, but speed faster than 38400 may cause problems with large amounts of data), delay of 12 microseconds inserted between end of the stopbit and the beginning of the next startbit (also working without this delay).

This device may be connected to the firewire computer port by straight cable (TPB+/-, TPA +/- should be twisted pairs in cable)

iPod Nano 4th Gen no longer will charge from 12 volts on the firwire pins. If you tie pins 25 and 27 together through a 10K ohm resistor while applying +/- 5 volts to pins 23 and 15 (or 16) that it will charge. If you don't tie 25 and 27 together, it won't charge

iPod Touch 2G requires pin 11 connected to 15/16, then connect that to pin 21 with a 68kOhm resistor to use the audio line out. This is because the device needs to be told to redirect the signal to the Line Out pins rather than to the built-in speaker. This explains why certain accessories won't work with the iPod Touch 2G and maybe even the iPod Touch 3G.
