Carb Issues...

Hi Guys,

I thought I would throw this out there.

The 86 LX will start up just fine regardless of weather conditions (started right up in -10 degree weather). Once its been running for a few seconds it starts missing like crazy and it wants to stall. I have to hold the throttle to keep it from stalling. When it is cold it also smells like gas. If I hold the RPM closer to 3500 the miss firing goes away, but as soon as I let up on the revs it will start missing again.

Once it has warmed up for a few minutes it runs fine, but the warm idle seems to be around 1250 - 1500 RPM. I tried getting it lower by adjusting the idle speed a long time ago, but this resulted in a dieseling effect, so I turned it back up.

Another intermittent issue it has: sometimes when it is warm, it will (for no apparent reason) decide it simply doesn't want to idle at all. It happens at random times without any warning. Any ideas?

Start with the simple stuff first. What kind of gas are you using? Have you checked the timing? How long since your last tune up? The dieseling sounds like a dirty fuel system. Start by running a can of injector cleaner through it and see if it helps. The gas smell could be that you need a new charcoal canister. I suspect you need a new carburetor but that's a last resort. Let's see if we can get you running right with the simple stuff first.

Check the diaphram for the heat door in the air filter housing and make sure it hold vacuum. It sounds like it has a vacuum leak somewhere and someone turned the idle up to overcome it.

You lowered the idle and still got it to diesel?

Usually it takes a hot engine, high rpm, or the ignition timing being off for it to diesel.

If it's heat related check you cooling system, engine lubrication, and check/read your plugs since they'll tell you if you might be running lean or rich and could be the reason for dieseling.



I wonder if your dieseling is caused by a faulty Fuel-cut-off solenoid at the back of the carb. It may also explain why you have a hard time idling since it supplies fuel to the idle circuit but you can get the car to run at higher rpms since a wider throttle opening brings you off of the idle circuit and pulls fuel from the primary.
