carb problems

here is the problem.
my 88 lx starts easy in the morning but dies right away unless I feather the accelerator for about 5 min.
then runs fine.
when I come to a stop and it's in drive it idles very rough and feels like it wants to die unless I put it in neutrol.
sometimes when I take off from a stop it has a hesitation also.

My first guess would be a vacuum leak(s). I suspest the choke/ high idle pulloff diaphram on the carb. Also check the diaphram for the hot air door in the intake hose and make sure it holds vacuum.

Sounds like a choke issue to me. Choke is not staying closed long enough, or isn't closed at all...

I 'd say vacuum leak too. But check to see if your choke is opening if you are stalling and you car is already warmed up.

Check your coolant level since that is important for heating the carb, cooling the engine, and running the various thermo sensors/switches.

seems like you're off the fast idle, either it's not set right or something else is causing it to kick off early. Pressing the pedal will get you off fast idle but only once the car is warm enough. I'm still leaning towards vacuum leak though.

This is the same exact thing mine was doing, and It took me about a month of troubleshooting to figure it out.
What I found out was out of all the emission controls, vacuum controls, and solenoid valves there were two things that effected idle the most.
A good size vacuum leak and a clogged idle circuit will make the engine run very rough.
If you have checked the vacuum hoses and you’re fairly sure they are alright, then try taking a look at the idle circuit.
The quick ways to do this is by removing your slow idle cutoff solenoid valve from the back of your carburetor and blow it out with carburetor cleaner.
Also another quickie but a little better plan is also taking the top off the carburetor, and you can clean the circuit even better. This will also give you a good idea of just how dirty you’re carburetor is, so you may find it even better to just to remove it entirely, and do it up right.
Tip:
If your idle circuit is clogged, you can see that the primary jet will have more than the normal amount of fuel coming out. When the idle circuit is working right you should barley be able to see fuel coming from the primary jet.
