    OBD1 conversion on Automatic

Can it be done? Has it been done?

It would seem that if the 3g's auto is not electronically controlled, which I don't think it is, then the only issue a manual trans OBD1 ecu would have would be making sure the engine maintained idle while stopped in gear. The IAC on the 3g seems to be vacuum operated, so a fix should be pretty simple. Thoughts?

I don't think it would matter really, as you say the tranny is not electronically controlled.
Although it is only fair to mention the JDM B20a models do have TCU for torque converter.

If you were setting up your engine for performance and have an automatic you should be able to go by the same specs as everyone else with 5 speeds here. Only when you get to some very detailed tuning on a dyno would you see any need for variance in tune using an automatic tranny so .. cross that bridge when you get to it.

It's possible... I intend to give it a try when I replace the seals on the auto.
