    Auto X rear brakes??

So After having my 3g Hatch down for a while and a few unfortunate events (like a canopy blowing off a truck in a wind storm and smashing it up. I picked up a Coupe to swap all my parts. But It's been so long since I've researched into my 3g, and boy has the market changed. So my question is for the trackers and auto-Xers ONLY PLEASE. What are you running for rear shoes (drums)? I have Hawk HP plus pads and brembo blanks for the front (That's what I had before, and I loved it) But what about the rear? Thanks! Oh BTW it's an 89 LXi coupe that I picked up.

My best advice is to try to find an SE-i to snag the rear disc setup off of. Drums are OK, but if they see an serious track use your going to be changing them. Often.

Yeah I've been considering it, but for the time being. I know they fade more but in the rear it hasn't ever bothered me beings that it was mostly auto x and they dont get that hot. but on full track days they do but then again in my hatch the rear was so light It didn't bother me. But I'm afraid this coupe may be a whole new can of worms.

Theres really nothing to the rear of coupes either. They are a bit longer, but thats it. Nice strong springs in the rear and it feels like you can pitch the back end anywhere you want.

Meh, I don't think you'll notice any difference regardless of your shoes at an autocross. Most people don't bother with the rear pads even with a rear disc setup... and just buy the cheapie stuff. Drums have a lot more surface area to grab. They just don't shed heat as well. Cheaper stuff will probably bite a lot sooner anyways at colder temps which I'm sure your drums will be operating at anyways. I wouldn't worry about it.

I have the same setup as you, stock rear, brembo/hawk fronts. Braking around sweepers in the wet, the inside/rear tire locks up rather easily; obviously some of this is from the stock 1989 suspension, but it really seems like the brake balance is good as-is; I doubt more aggressive rear drums/pads is going to help with things like trail braking or getting the car to rotate.

I have no complaints regarding autocross, or backroads drives, but I'd be hesitant to use the setup on a HPDE / open-track event, the HP+'s just wouldn't be up to the task after a few laps, hawk blues would be a much more suitable choice.

And it goes without saying, be safe & bleed your brakes before a HPDE/open track event!...

Yeah, I think I'd rather run ebc yellows than the Hawk blues. I think for the time being I'm gonna keep the drums until I start to notice them not doing their job.

I need to start a new build thread I think...

    Re: Auto X rear brakes??

I track my car at auto x and circuit and HPDE. I have never had a problem running rear SEI disks. MY problem has always been Killing the front rotors at HPDE events. Speeds are high turns come up quick and sharply.

ovewr the last 2 years of autox and HPDE events I have found that the rear disks are almost perfect for a hatch. run some good Axxis pads or Hawk pads and you wont have an issue. The majority of the weight is on the front. If you put to much brake in the rear it will come around on you when late braking after turn in. Or it could even pitch the rear end in straight line braking.

Drums arent really that bad. get a good set of shoes and adjust them perfectly and you will rock the auto x.

having alot of brake up front will allow you to roll the weight forward hard and fast. which pulls alot of weight off the rear. even with my stock brakes all around with my 225 tires on a late apex corner i can be on the brakes lift slightly turn in and stab hard and fast and oversteer the rear end around the turn. makes turning that much faster.

if you point the nose of the car to the inside of the turn you will never incurr understeer.

I dont think anybody was saying anything bad about rear discs. But the benefits out weigh the cost and hassle IMO. I mean they are a lot heavier, And cost a lot more to maintain. But Adjusting drums is pretty damn easy. I'm not a Noob to these cars either or tracking. It's just been so long since I've researched anything. Which is why I asked the question about rear shoes, and which ones to get.
