losts s2000 pushbutton start switch project

Ok I got a really really good deal on an S2000 pushbutton start, a real one, not a knock off, lets say under 15 bucks, with harness plug, I did the first part of the machine work on it today, it's going where the factory lighter was. I need to build a harness yet, it needs a relay for start of course, and I'm using a normally closed relay with a fuel pump relay, to prevent pushbutton happy people, from pushing the button while the engine is running. when it detects RPMs it it's 12 volts out, and this will actvate a normally closed relay to lock out the button while the engine is turning. The other nice thing about this, is the button is illuminated, with this setup, the button will light up when the key is in ignition 2 position, then go out when the engine is running.

this is the first step, I just made this aluminum bezel for the button, took about 3 hours to get it perfect, it's such a tight tolerance, the button snaps into place. I've seen some horrible installs of these, even the use of duct tape, something off an s2000 deserves the time to install it right. The car already died a horrible death at the hands of a tree, (fell on it) , no point in abusing it's body parts. the square piece isn't done yet, I fit it to the button first, then I'll trim it to fit in the area of the factory lighter plug. the square piece will get epoxied in, and become a permanent part of the dash. the bezel attaches with socket head screws.

make sure you do what I did, use an extra carb fuel pump relay and a normally closed relay, you don't want to bump the button at high rpm and rip off the starter.

Happy I went ahead and did the a 3 button system instead of a sinle.

    Sounds way harder.

the relay is really easy, a fuel pump relay has four connections , power which comes from ignition 2, or ignition 1 whichever stays hot when you turn the ley to start, ground, a wire going to the negative on the coil, and an output wire. you use a bosch type relay with a normally closed contact. power going to the start switch goes through this contact. the output of the fuel pump relay goes to the relay coil. when the relay detects rpm's, it energizes the bosch relay cutting off power to the start button. if you want to make it reaally simple, tie the bosch relay coil to fuel pump power after the fuel pump relay. this is if you have a carb. if you don't you need a fuel pump relay.

Won't the starter cut out the instant the engine starts spinning? Seems like it might be an issue with a carb'd car that may need a little extended cranking...

i think it has to reach a certain rpm first

if it does, then you could also add cut off point things into the battery light & oil pressure light + a capacitor. that's what i did for my remote start

thats a good idea, and probably simpler for others to figure out, ground from the oil pressure switch would close a relay allowing power to the start circuit. simple, power from ig 1 or 2 , ground from the oil pressure switch, and the relay would close ignition power for the pushbutton start switch. once the oil pressure light went out, the relay would open. you would need a capacitor though, because the light will go off on cranking, I have a 15 psi switch though, so it may not be needed

When I can scan it, I figured out a way to make this work, using the oil pressure switch ground, a diode and two bosche type relays. it's very simple, as long as the button is pushed it will continue to crank the car , once you let go of it, the button won't crank again unless the oil pressure light is on

ahh fooey, my carbed car starts up the second it turns over, starter barely enguages. YET the pos Lxi has to turn over a couple four or five times. From what I gather it is the ghey cam sensor dizzy bs. I havent delved into even looking into it yet.
You make a good point though, I shall read on...

the way i came up with today, the car will crank regardless of how long you press the the button,
it just won't recrank while the oil light is out, once the oil light comes back on it will restart
