sounds like all the ball joints and the rack are worn out if you have that much play. i'd be getting it checked out before you become one with a gum tree eh
is steering rack a diy job is it cheap if parts are from wreckers ?
Can be, It's not too bad of a job. I swapped mine in a half hour power steering and all.
