    Downforce thing

Looked up those vortex things on the rear window of a Mitsubishi Evo and came across this..

Seems like an interesting read complete w/ sketched pictures.

I'll bet that most are made purely just for cosmetic reasons though

True, but you never know how some will help with acceleration..

Especially the hood thing, keeping heat from the engine bay is ALWAYS a good thing, so some are pretty useful in all conditions.

    Re: Downforce thing

I decided on a Ford escort hatch rear spoiler, it's heavy fiberglass and it's made to actually function. I had done small scale wind tunnel tests on an AE86 model, which is the closest things I could find to the Accord hatch, and there is a lot of turbulence right behind the car, due to air from the sides, hitting air coming off the the hatch glass, the spoiler seems to help smooth out that air tumbling off of the glass, all that turbulence at the back of the car likes to make the rear of the car a bit squirrely, that seemed to go away with the addition of that spoiler.
